Of course you're entitled to your opinion, but I prefer to see shops which are part of the culture of the country I'm visiting.
I drive a lot in Spain and France and the modern row of stores seem to be cropping up everywhere.....all the same and sometimes in the same order! How long before your so-called 'progress' takes over completely. To me part of the experience of going abroad is to go into different shops and trying out something new.
The same is unfortunately happening in the UK and it won't be long before every high street is the same. If you move to another country of course you will miss some of the English things, I do, but that is part of the compromise. When I had a place on the Costa Blanca I noticed it was becoming more and more Anglicized and I didn't like it. It seems that when immigrants get together (and they always seem to settle in one place) they try and change the place to make it more like the home they left behind. Just have a look at any town in Britain, there's a large part of my town where it's difficult to remember it's England!
I don't call it progress, but rather a dilution of culture. If you can't live without a kipper or a pork pie maybe you're in the wrong place.
Tesco's moving into Spain albeit under a different name is the thin end of the wedge if they concentrate on selling British produce. At least in the far East they call themselves Tesco and sell local produce.
Just my opinion.
