Well Donna without Tesco where would I be able to buy smoked mackerel, fresh kippers, pork pies, sausage rolls? I crave for these daily,. I am fed up with buying cheap fresh fish, fresh chicken (not frozen) like the UK and fresh vegetables. My prays have now been answered

My OH agrees whole heartedly with your comments, where do you buy fresh kippers, Ginny haddock, pork pies with jelly if no Tesco’s.

There's nothing 'un-spanish' about having a new Tesco store in town, have a look around any European town or city,  its called progress.   Freedom to shop, I think it's great.  Just because I fancy a Melton Mowbray pork pie today,  doesn't mean I won't fancy a tapas tomorrow.  Just saying.

No fresh kippers I am sad to say, in fact not much fresh stuff its all pre-packed in plastic, unless you want veg, it was a bit of a waste of time, got my pork pies although a bit expensive but one has to treat oneself occasionally

Of course you're entitled to your opinion, but I prefer to see shops which are part of the culture of the country I'm visiting.

I drive a lot in Spain and France and the modern row of stores seem to be cropping up everywhere.....all the same and sometimes in the same order! How long before your so-called 'progress' takes over completely. To me part of the experience of going abroad is to go into different shops and trying out something new.

The same is unfortunately happening in the UK and it won't be long before every high street is the same. If you move to another country of course you will miss some of the English things, I do, but that is part of the compromise. When I had a place on the Costa Blanca I noticed it was becoming more and more Anglicized and I didn't like it. It seems that when immigrants get together (and they always seem to settle in one place) they try and change the place to make it more like the home they left behind. Just have a look at any town in Britain, there's a large part of my town where it's difficult to remember it's England!

I don't call it progress, but rather a dilution of culture. If you can't live without a kipper or a pork pie maybe you're in the wrong place.

Tesco's moving into Spain albeit under a different name is the thin end of the wedge if they concentrate on selling British produce. At least in the far East they call themselves Tesco and sell local produce.

Just my opinion.

Yes welll happily there is room for everyone's tastes and it is quite in order for anyone who wants a pork pie to be able to get it in Spain, nothing wrong with that. Culture us all very well but it is possible to enjoy the culture of another country without losing your own identity in the process and forgive me but your tone is quite lecturing and surely we can all live and let live as one wishes. Its called democracy. Nobody is forcing anyone else to eat pork pies if they don't want to but equally one doesn't have to abandon ones own preferences just because one is in a different country

Sorry but I was saying this with tongue in cheek as my friend initiated the conversations about Tesco first.

You are quite right us immigrants should spend our money helping the economy of the country we live in. I can really live without a pork pie or kippers until I visit the UK

Then do so John. I'm a British guy, lived in South Ireland 5 years where Tesco is everywhere, selves quite different to the shelves in Manchester but happy I can get my pork pie still as a treat, it hasn't diluted Irish culture or produce, its added to it.  I don't offend the Irish because I'd sooner drink John Smith's rather than Guinness.  Times are changing,  cultures naturally blend.  I'm off to Spain soon to enjoy their tapas, and the odd pork pie.
