Hi all hope this is allowed and sorry if not, I am looking at moving to Spain with my family (wife and 3 kids) I am a domestic appliance engineer but also do property maintenance and was looking at coming out and doing my own thing as I do in the uk, my question is there enough work in camposol and the local area for this type of work, and also is the school’s good in the area. Thanks Er

To be able to come and live in Spain you will need a working visa from the Spanish embassy. AFAIK this means you have to have a firm job contract, as well as fulfilling the rules on proven income, taking out private health insurance for the family, a police certificate, a medical report from your doctor….the days of being able to come to Spain then look for work are over - unless you are an EU citizen like Irish.

Hi Peter

Thanks Erthanks for your quick response, we have a good amount of savings that would more than cover a couple of years rent and living expenses so that part would be fine, I would be looking at starting my own company so is that more difficult to get in than just having a job ?

It is not just a question of covering rent etc. To get residency there are set figures for main applicant then so much per family member. You would have to enquire about rules for self-employment, but to give an idea for a ‘normal ‘ visa, that is someone intending to live off savings and pensions they want proof of

  • Monthly Income of 2151,36€
  • Monthly Income of +537,84€ for each family member in your care.
  • Plus private health cover etc

Further to the other responses, please see below a link to the visa process for the self-employed (autonomo) visa, which is what you would need...

Apart from RichT's advice above regarding becoming self-employed, you may also need to "homologar" your professional qualifications as they are not automatically transferrable from the UK to Spain.
