A warning to other car hirers:

Interrent took 150 euros 'fuel deposit' (it must have been a very big fuel tank!) when I recently hired a car from Alicante airport on a 'full to full' basis.  The car was filled up which was confirmed on return of the car but nearly 3 weeks later there is no sign of the deposit being returned.  I have written several emails and received replies including that "the fuel deposit was returned on 12th Aug" which was when the rental started so they must have been clairvoyant that I would return it full two weeks later.

This feels beyond incompetence and more like fraud to me.  Has anyone had a similar experience and if so how did you resolve it?  I think contacting my credit card company is the next step but I'm sure that won't be quick either.....

Contact your credit card company.

Send them all the documents & copies of your emails & let them sort it out.

They are usually pretty good with things like this.

Fairly common occurrence unfortunately.

Sorry for your experience. Do what Roland suggests. Internet, Goldcar and Europcar are the same gang of crooks.

Uk law protects you tell the credit card company and ask (tell) them to refund under I think section 75 of the consumer credit act.

This is why you should always pay by credit card, only shady people avoid paying by credit card.

I term a credit card a payment protection card

Totally agree ..... Goldcar (also operate as Interent) are a bunch of crooks who will try all sorts of scare tactics to fleece money from the person hiring their cars. Also, make charges once the vehicle has been returned, stating that damage has occurred.

Filling in the Complaints book seems to have no effect. The only way to disrupt their business is to let as many people as possible,  know that they will be dealing with a company which encourages their employees to break the law.
