Hi all

Just had a Spanish workman knock on my door, and tell me he’s come to do my gas certificate.

We don’t have gas, so easily resolved. However, he did say that the previous residents had one 5 years ago, and you need one every 5 years???

Is this true??? Was it a scam of some kind???

Thanks in advance

If you use gas in bottles (or a tank) for a fixed appliance such as hot water, heating or cooking, you need a safety inspection every 5 years.

Additionally, gas flexible connections are date-stamped, and should be replaced every 5 years.

This is a legal requirement.

We have had it done twice by CEPSA. On each occasion the inspector showed no interest in our mobile barbecue.

On each occasion, we have contacted CEPSA (well, our gas installer did on our behalf).

Thanks for this, we have been warning, on a few occasions, about people knocking on properties to see if people are in residence. So this looks as though it’s genuine.

Thanks again

Hi re gas inspection

As Will 60, said if you use gas you should have a certificate which is renewable by your supplier, this also would cover you for your household insurance, if for instance you had a fire or god forbid an explosion.

When you need to renew the certificate you should contact the issuer of the contract. and they will come at your convenience. Not applicable to you as you have no gas at the moment.

It has been a well known scam in Spain for many years for people to approach home owners and if they use gas try to scare them into allowing them to service you appliances. No new certificate would be issued and no work would be done but they would charge you a fortune.

Unfortunately many people are unaware of this scam and get conned.

Any person coming to your door to offer services should carry an identification card of the company (or even there personal identity card as this would have their photo) they are supposed to work for, but it is very unusual for any supply to cold call you.

Regards

Edward

Further to the other replies, it's a legal requirement to have a gas boiler serviced every two years (it was annually until 2013). This appears never to be enforced, but culturally many Spanish do this anyway via their energy supplier.

There are different rules if you rent out your property.

Don’t deal with anyone who knocks uninvited at you door. Research and find a reputable company. It is advised to get a service. See who the agent is for your particular boiler unit and ask them. Make sure they are reg
