Just wondering those folk who went or going through this non lucrative visa process , how long has it taken from gathering all the paperwork you need and then getting the appointment for the embassy, is it weeks or months , as we are looking at not being in Spain until late  July time and I do know you have to be in Spain with in 3 months after receiving this visa .

Also do you have to hand in your passport at the time of handing in the documents and you cannot get that back until it’s all sorted out .

We got the appointment at the consulate in Manchester (actually the company that they now outsource this work to) at about a month's notice. We were then told that the visa approval could take anywhere from 2 weeks to 3 months - but it was approved within 10 days!

The visa is attached to the passport, so you need to leave it at the consulate - we certainly did. We then arranged to go & collect the passport, etc. in person, as we didn't trust the postal service, but I am aware that they can post it out to you.

Hope this helps!

Thanks Rich, we are in the process of buying and that should all go through by late March so it would be nice to go there then to make sure all is well for a week or two then back mid April and then start the visa process, don't want to be there any longer then permitting so we do not have to pay tax for this year

Be careful you don’t exceed the 182 days in any calendar year, as this will include any visits you make in 2025, and if you are planning on moving in July you could easily exceed that number and that would leave you at risk of paying CGT to Spain 😟
