With the cost of health care a major factor to our retirement plans I am asking is there any members here who does not have health cover but are using the cover you get with the S1 form if so are you happy with how it’s working for you .

I do know that you pay for what you get and there will be some folk saying paying for healthcare is the best way to go but if you are on a fixed income every little helps .

Also if I am wanting to move to Spain as a none lucrative visa do I need the S1 form set up first

Totally agree the health care is amazing using your S1 I recently had a fall requiring stitches waited  less than 5 mins in casualty to be triaged then just over an hour to be seen.

Left with follow up to local clinic

When I attended The clinic for the second time the nurse was a bit worried that the wound had become infected so she called a Doctor Who examined me and did a full medical review including bloods and urine

I can’t praise them enough

You will need to provide your S1 as part of the documents you need to apply for a Non Lucrative Visa, so you will need to apply for the S1 first.

My husband had S1 health cert. from DWP when retiring to Spain at 63, I was 60 so qualified for SHS in my own right with the official healthcard. This was in 2003 and I believe it is easier to set, up and obtain a health centre doctor now, but we used a Gestoria to be sure everything was fully legal. It took 3 months to obtain the official health card , but in the interim we had an official letter of authorization to present at the health centre until he reached 65 and transitioned with no problem. The treatment is no different if you have a letter to present. My husband had heart and circulation problems and I don't think he received timely treatment  for it -( partly due to Covid restrictions), but maybe not - he died in 2020 and there will always be that doubt in my mind.  I had a problem with hiatus hernia, it was bad and needed surgery, but again - due to Covid restrictions I had to suffer for 2 years until Covid ended and I was attended to successfully. Now I find a deterioration in the service received.: primarily in obtaining appointments with the doctor, being referred for specialists and obtaining scans. I now have a mixture of private initial doctor consultations for convenience; paying for priority scans, but if needing expensive surgery asking the SPH. - Works for me!

Ring DWP in UK and they send you a pre populated one so nothing to fill in yourself

First you must qualify for it by intending to live in Spain permanently,  and be of  working age (under 65 years), ring H.Q Newcastle upon Tyne 800 731 7898  +44 if you call from Spain.  When you reach pensionable age you can then apply for Spanish Health Card - and receive free care.
