Hello

We are moving to Calasparra in April/May and are looking for the best transport option.

Have any members got any advice on whether its best to buy /lease or hire a car when we are living in Spain.

Contacts for the option you advise would also be appreciated.

Thankyou

Michael & Karen

Hello Michael & Karen

Think majority of people buy a car if they are residents but if only coming for few weeks/month at a time maybe hiring is the best option.

Don't know of anyone leasing.

Hope this may be of help but hope all goes well for the move to Calasparra.

Rick

Hello again

Thank you for the info.

We will be here permanently so I guess I,ll have to hire for a while and look at purchasing/leasing.

I know the banks do leasing but I was trying to weigh up the most cost effective option.

Your replies are much appreciated thanks

You can hire a car for as little as £2 per day (don't use Goldcar or Interrent though), but most companies have a maximum of 30 days rentals, after which you have to return the car to be checked over. Also ensure that you rent with 'unlimited mileage' if you're thinking of driving a lot, as most have a limit on mileage and the per km charge for going over soon mounts up. I have a year round excess cover policy for around £60pa (icarinsurance.com) which is useful for car hire, but this may not be valid for long term rentals, so worth checking, otherwise any savings in car hire may be eaten up in insurance premiums.

Anecdotally, the used car market in Spain is less developed than the UK as it's less common for people to have company cars, car fleets, etc. that feed the used car market. The main feed are ex- hire cars, which can take a hammering, so be careful if looking to buy one with that history.

Leasing is available via the major manufacturers and also via banks - but I have no experience of this.

Maybe as you suggest, hire for the first few weeks / months until you find the best option...

Took your time David, was expecting your usual post days ago!

To OP, all dealers will have dissatisfied customers, purely based on numbers. Use your own common sense, read up on the dealers if possible. If in doubt see if you can find a friend/neighbour with a little car knowledge  to help you view. Not always the minefield it's painted to be.

Also in the same position. Is there an area of Murcia city where the main car dealerships are located ?

There are quite a few in the area around the IKEA store.

Or google map the manufacturers that you are interested in and work out where most are...
