Hi, Alan. Are you talking about Calasparra? We live (part time) in Mula which is a couple of towns closer to Murcia, but on the same main road.  From what I know of these places (Mula, Bullas, Pliego, Calasparra) they are 'working' towns so function the same in winter as they do in summer. We love our place all year round, but are in the middle of very traditional Spanish homes and families rather than on an urbanisation.  We've been here as non residents over 2 years. For tradesmen, yes, you do have to look hard but there are reliable people around. The only thing I would consider is the distance you are from Alicante Airport - over an hours' drive to Mula in the winter/dark is long enough and Calasparra is another 40 mins on top of that. Hope this helps ☺.

Yes thanks we are looking at Calasparra

We are slightly concerned about the issue re squatters- is this common in Spain?

As the house would be empty for 50%of the year

There is also the issue of tradespeople when things go wrong

Regarding squatters, it depends where you want live - an Urbanisation or Campo               (Countryside). Either way a house alarm would be beneficial as you will be part time. An Urbanisation gives you neighbours to help with visible security of course. We have been in Calasparra for 14 years and love it. If you need tradespeople to do work or repairs there are plenty a available.  Murcia International Airport at Corvera is an hour away which gives you a flight option but not all UK airports fly there.  If you need any more information, please PM me. Good luck with your house search.
