Hi please could anybody advise me wether it is cheaper for dog surgery in spain or the UK. I have just been quoted £600 to remove 2 x tiny cysts in the UK we are moving to spain permanently in 4-6 weeks.

If anyone has any idea I would be grateful

I would say definitely Spain.

We live close to an inland rural town, it would probably be a bit more expensive on the coast.

Here's our experience. A year ago one of our dogs was savagely attacked by others (not ours). We found her horribly injured and shocked at about 8pm and immediately phoned Alfonso, our local vet, who luckily was still in the surgery. We rushed her in, he immediately anaesthetised her and spent two and a half hours stitching her up. We collected her, still unconscious, at about 11pm. Her injuries were such that it would have been impossible to put her in the car without hurting her for follow-up appoinments. Alfonso came to our house every day for four days to give her antibiotic and painkillers by injection. After that, she rallied for a couple of days, then became very listless and wouldn't eat. We called him, he came here immediately and checked her over and found her gums were grey - she was very anaemic. We now know she had internal bleeding but at the time it did not seem likely from a dogfight. He gave her more antibiotic and painkillers by injection as she could not eat. He came back again and took blood to test (difficult because of the anaemia) and also gave her an injection to help the anaemia. The following day she vomited huge amounts of blood and died in our arms before he could get here.

My eyes are leaking just thinking about it. The reason I have gone into such detail is to show how much time and drugs were given to her. The total bill: less than 600 Euros.

Just to add: she was quite a big dog - just under 30 kilos. RIP beautiful Osa.

In 2012, my horse needed eye surgery. She went to the Horsepital in Murcia city. Done under general anaesthetic, the operation needed an anaesthetist as well as the surgeon and she was there for a week so there were stabling costs as well. The whole thing cost 1200 Euros.

So, if it's not urgent, definitely Spain. Hope this helps and hasn't upset anyone (except me).

Thank you so much For your help and I am so so sorry to hear about your dog, terrible. Are dogs kept on leads in spain, I only let mine off if I am 100% sure there are no other dogs around, too scared incase they get attacked by other dogs I have a Pomeranian and a tiny shitzhu cross with a chihuahua. Thanks Alexis

I can't be much help for that. We are out in the country, our finca borders another huge commercial one which we use like our own private park! So our boy is never on a lead here.

Certainly in town, dogs are on leads, large dogs are supposed to be muzzled too. Not something for you to be worried about with your little guys!

Hi

We have found vets in Spain are a lot cheaper than the UK. Our 19 year old dog was very sick with blood in severe diarrhoea and we thought he was going to die but vet was brilliant, injections, pills, 2 trips to see her and some special food and powder all for €40 and the old boy is fit as a fiddle now.
