Hi,

My husband and myself are looking to buy a property in the Murcia region. We only have one concern. How do we get access to healthcare as we are hoping to become permanent residents and not holiday home owners.  I am an insulin dependent diabetic plus other meds. We will not have reached UK retirement age (4 years). We will have private pensions so can prove we can support ourselves.

Any guidance would be of a great help.

Thanks

Depending on where you choose to live. You can take out private health insurance or register at a local private clinic.  There is one on Camposol. It's next to the pharmacia. You would need to contact them director full details.

Apparently you can get free health care when you become a resident ...even when you are under UK retirement age ..the king of Spain made a royal decree that all residents are in titled to free health care ...I am not to sure how it works or how you apply but it could be worth looking into.

Unfortunately Murcia doesn't agree to what had been proposed and all applications are on hold. Not does the new "law" give access to full free health care.

Murcia has not adopted the Univesal Healthcare access and neither can you just register with your local heakth centre !

To apply for your residencia as legal permanent residents you need to prove that you have healthcare. Without your UK state pension you will need private health insurance. If you google it there are lots that operate here although prescriptions are not normally covered....medication is much cheaper here than the UK.. Try Sanitas for an idea of cost.

After a year of residency you can join the Spanish health service for around 60€ a month (Convenio Especial)....bear in mind that everything could change after Brexit!

Hi, we have heard so many things about the King of Spain, and Royal Decree on health care.

It would be very good to see in writing, that all Residents of Spain, no matter what status  are entitled to free health care.

Every body talks about it, but what is the present legal status of ex pat residents and health care?

Yes Brexit will alter things, as no longer will the EU pay for ex pats from England who require health care in another EU country.

So, what is the correct position, ?

You need to look at the info on the CAB Spain website...although a Royal Decree the autonomous areas of Spain may not all adopt it. So far only Andalucia in this area. So for the rest its still eitherbprivate health care or access for UK State Pensioners through an S1 form.

As you say it may all change after Brexit for those still to apply for residencia.

Who says it will change after Brexit? no-one knows what deals will be agreed even in the event of a ‘no-deal’ something may be put in place.

OAPs in Spain should not be worried about NHS. Care in Spain... as the UK government pays the Spanish government €3,500 per year... for ever UK OAP it has to look after..this is the same amount a Spaniard has to pay in N.I contributions ...so basically OAP.s are not a burden on the Spanish Tax payer.
