Hi everyone,

Lots of questions in one as we can't go anywhere unless the two doggies get to come with us.

We are an Irish couple in our 50's who would see ourselves renting for a few months before buying (probably early 2018)  Has anyone brought their dogs from UK/Ireland and how did the acclimatize?.  We have two young springer spaniels who need lots of exercise - is it an option to let them run around on the open spaces nearby?  are there vets, groomers etc nearby?, do you need dog licences in Spain?  How did your dogs adapt to change of diet or are familiar brands of dog food readily available (our would probably eat anything anyway).

Many thanks in advance for any tips anyone might have.

Kind regards

Eugene & Bridget

We too are heading to Spain with our weimaraner attend of month.  We are driving and getting le shuttle from folkstone to Calais.  I will letbyou know how the drive goes and how our weim takes to the weather.  We were hoping to have been there in April so she aclimitise to the heat gradually.  She coped well in our 2 week heatwave although much quieter and not so energetic as she usually is (more like a normal dog🤣🤣🤣).  I just had a fab on indoors for her and she coped.   She is 7.  We have air con where we are going so indoors will be nice.  We will be 20 mins inland from end of month but in Feb we will be on the coast so next summer should be slightly cooler.

We are renting on a good course that went bankrupt so people walk there dogs freely there.  I've read lots of posts that dogs can only go on some beaches whatever the time of day and year.

Personally unless I know the people and dog I don't let my dog socialise.  I prefer dogs to meet in controlled situation rather than a dog come full pelt at my dog.  She will not tolerate that so around other digs I don't know she is on a lead.

I will keep you posted as I too am going into the unknown and I'm more worried about her than us.

Karen

Hi,

I moved here 1st Feb, drove down with my two dogs. I have a westie and a bichon. They have adjusted very well, they are getting more used to the climate now and spend a lot of the day indoors asleep then run around and play in the evening when it's cooler.

I tried a few different foods before I found one in carre fourre that they both like, as for vets, luckily I haven't had to take them yet but there are several good ones around the area. I take them both to a groomer in Valle de sol once a month, she's very good with them.

As for beaches, there are only a few that you can take dogs to in the summer, these are around the mazzaron area. If you go on Costa calida beaches it tells you more.

There are a lot of lovely places to walk with dogs around here, just do it early morning or late evening

Hope this helps

Jacky

Hi, I've not moved over yet with our dog, but our neighbours have and their dogs seem to have coped very well. 1 is a long haired German Shepherd, the others are  Burnese mountain dog and a couple of whippets. As long as you provide ample shaded areas, plenty of fresh water they should be fine. There is a vet and dog groomers on Sector B on Camposol for all the dogs needs. Loads of open spaces for the dogs to run. Not too sure if they need an actual dog licence in Spain but I'm sure someone on here will be able to tell you or google it......As for food, not checked it out but I'm sure there are various Spanish and English brands available. ( There is an English Supermarket on B Sector).

Good luck with your rental/eventual move to Camposol.

Thank you - good to know there is a vet onsite (hyper Springers always liable to injure themselves) - I'm going to research pet insurance in Spain also.  I guess if a big lovely fella like the Bernese can cope my two will too :)

Be interesting to know of a pet insurance.  I have 90 days with pet plan then nothing.  I did look around and contact few insurance companies but they were not interested and suggested I set money aside.  Like you I have a gun dog who always seems to injury herself.
