Hi there,

We are travelling down on Thursday. This link shows you three options https://goo.gl/maps/7MqzwpitA1CWkRrP8

We are going to use the western route through Rouen and Bordeaux. Depending on time we will use the Somfort Tunnel as the point to cross into Spain.

If you are on the Preguntas y Mas group on Facebook, you can find the thread on 26th April at 1740hrs, along with all the great suggestions I received. If you join that group or the Camposol Facebook page, people are really helpful in responding to questions by newbies like us.

Best wishes and good luck with your plans

Hi all--this is a good route, and I go more or less the same way.At Rouen I head for Chartres on the N road to avoid some of the tolls. It's a fast dual carriageway most of the way,and you have the advantage of cheaper fuel availability (1.40 a litre as opposed to 1.65 on the Autoroute) The Somport Tunnel through the Pyrennees is a picturesque route and from there to Camposol there are no tolls--all free motorway with hardly any traffic until you get to Valencia.Last time, the whole trip from Calais cost me 15.20 euros in tolls the entire way.If you want to stay a night with your dogs, the Ibis Budget hotels are plentiful and cheap.Good Luck with your journey.

Hi there,

We've just travelled down to our 'newly bought' home on D. We did the overland trip last week.

We travelled from Lancaster, North West England. We travelled down - leisurely - to the chunnel on the first day for the 5.20pm train but arrived early enough to get the 4.20pm ( time change was free ). We got our hotel in Calais - the IBIS Car Ferry Hotel ( a couple of easy miles from the chunnel exit) at 6.00pm and stayed overnight - no problem with the dog staying with us (cost an extra 5 euros).

Day 2 travelled down (with several short breaks) to Saintes, Ibis (Saintes Hotel) arriving at about 5.30pm. Again no problem with dog - extra 7 euros,

Day 3 travelled to Alcasser (south of Valencia) with lots of short stops and arrived at, again, Ibis, Alcasser about 5.30pm - (charge for dog 5 euros).

Day 4 travelled down to Camposol arriving at 11.ooam to pick up the keys to our new home in Spain.

The overnight in Valencia, rather than travelling down to Camposol on day 3, was due to the timing in picking up keys etc. Next time we'll take a nice easy 3 days to travel down,

All roads were 'major', higher speed and a lovely route to travel.

Our route was:

Lancaster to Chunnel then trough to Calais

Calais to Saintes (via Rouen, Le Mans)

Saintes to Valancia (via Bordeaux, Pamplona, Zaragoza - fantastic Pyrenees)

Valencia to Camposol

Hope this helps.

Cheers  Barry & Christine

Hi Gerry

Can you give the town by town route, estimated time taken to the Spanish border and rough cost of tolls please.

I normally go from dieppe- Rouen - Le Mans- tours - Poitiers - Sainties - Bordeaux.

Normally takes around 9hrs and about €90 in tolls

Hi--if you go on to About-France.com,it will give you the toll-free route for the way you go,with recommendations for which tolls are worth paying to shorten your journey. It also shows hotels on the route, for the other posters who need to stop over.I had a call to make in the Dordogne, and left this route,I think,at Angouleme.I later reset my satnav for Oloron Sainte Marie to take me through the Somport Tunnel.I got to Oloron for about 9pm,starting from Calais about 8am,with stops on the way.Just checked my log,and the tolls cost 15 euros in total. From there took the motorway via Zaragossa to Camposol--no toll charges.I've just come back again via Germany, and through the Somport Tunnel, and got on a new bit of motorway near Huesca which cost euro 2.30 for about 30 miles, which was a bargain. As I say,you can get lots of info on the About-France.com site to tailor your journey to your own requirements.Regards,Gerry
