Hi Barbara

Try Cajamar bank

I used to be with caixa, but because of charges, I have changed with Cajamar bank.

I have a free basic bank account with Cajamar, no charges if you operate online only and I don't have a debit card attached to it, cause no need it.

I have transferred all my DD from caixabank to Cajamar bank and closed my bank account with caixa.

Everything is ok, I only am with Cajamar since October this year.

Ask Cajamar bank that you want a basic bank account with no charges for your DD.

Hope this will help.

Have a good day

Marcel

Use the search box at the top of this page.

Search Banking or Free Banking.

Lots of info.

You don't actually need a Spanish bank account despite what the Spanish tell you.

Sadly, you will pay charges on a Spanish account. I have one with Sabadel but keep my British ones as well

No you won't pay charges on a Spanish bank account if you have the right account.

Hate to disagree but all the banks sent out emails earlier in the year saying as from the 31st Dec you can only have free or cheap banking if you pay in your pension have 3 direct debits and use your debit card at least twice each month our account was changed today by banco santandere now called a one account the new charges for our old account have risen to 20€ a month rising to 40€ a month in the near future I am sure lots will say not required but it is being done by All banks due to people just paying in enough to pay d/d s and them not making any money out of the account we now pay no fees at present by sticking to the rules

Cajamar Wefferent account is a free to operate account.

Or use TransferWise or Starling bank as a non Spanish alternative.

@dmoss

You are perfectly entitled to disagree with me.

But you are not correct in what you say.

You don't actually need a Spanish bank account but you need an IBAN that starts with ES for a lot of transactions.

You could use Transferwise as they offer you a bank account in GBP Euro USD etc.

You get an account number once you pay the requisite funds into the account.

If you are in Spain for any length of time in the future, it might be worth looking at the N26 account. It is easy to apply, they do some geolocation checking to ensure you are in Spain and as soon as you pay funds into the account yhey will send you a bank card to your postal address in Spain. Your account will be up and running in a matter of days.

Also Caixa Bank do a fee free account  - Remote Banking - you should be able to open with NIE.

Hope this helps you.
