Get a VOIP phone with a UK number, that way when your friends/family call it is usually free for them and when you call it is very cheap, costs me less than €0.10/hr to call a mobile, even less to a landline. It is also cheaper when phoning a spanish mobile.

Interesting, the reason I was asking the question is that I am a voip provider in the UK and wondered if there was any market there for it.

I don't think we could compete with 0.10 to mobile an hour though, who are you buying that from, I want to buy it :)

If you have wifi and an Apple device (iPhone, iPad) you can use Facetime, totally free. It is easy to use (our 4yr old greatgrandson uses it quite happily off his iPad).

If you are a holiday home owner ...you can use you UK mobile in Spain at no extra cost ...if you are a resident or a holiday home owner you can use the internet / what's app/skyp and so on .

I do not understand why your status should affect what you use. You can get on/off internet connection in your holiday home, it making no difference whether you are only here a little, or a lot. You can log on to any of the free wifi points in bars and restaurants, or indeed in big shopping centres and stores like Leroy Merlin, although I would not do anything secure, like banking.

Never heard of VOIP before. I'm on BT network in UK. I can never get a signal when i'm in spain, despite the fact BT keep telling me my sim should work when i'm over there. I usually pop to a cafe or shopping mall to use whattsapp and catch up on my emails.

If you are living here and you have internet you get a VOIP phone. Its just like an ordinary phone but it plugs into your router.
