Travelling by train

Hi
Has anybody used the train to get to Alicante Airport??
Is it even possible, if it is what station did you use?

Unlike lots of Spanish airports and despite its size Alicante does not have an on-site train, metro or tram station.
I was surprised when I flew there a few years ago to find that the only transport link to the city centre was by bus.
