Hi. I am due to come over to Spain in September and have hired a car to pick up at alicante Airport.

Checked British government website and it says I do not need a international driving permit for spain.

Has anyone hired a car recently so I know this is correct. If not what one do I need.?

Thanks Mark

You do not need an international driving permit to hire a car in Spain

The government website is correct.

I would actual check with your car hire company, there was a post recently where the terms of agreement stated you would need and international permit.

Unfortunately the Uk gov cannot control the terms laid out by a car hire companies. Hopefully you will not need one but better be safe and check, rather than have problems at the airport.

My partner hired a car in June/July on a UK licence, no issue.

100% correct.

Just your UK licence.

Do not use OK Mobility Car Rental from Alicante.  They are awful. Cheap but then take €1400 deposit and then try and claim the car is damaged.

Please avoid them.

But some of the hire companies (on their websites) ask for the international permit.

Not if you have a full UK licence.

Any web site  can and will have their own terms and conditions,  if you have not read them and the requirements are an international driving permit it makes no odds which 3rd country you come from,  and you will either be penalised with an extra charge or refused a vehicle.

Please see above,

Having travelled to Spain 3 times this year, using 3 different car rental companies - I can confidently say that you DO NOT need a driving permit if you are from the UK and have a UK Full Photocard licence.

Or, find the companies that DO NOT need a driving permit.

Exactly find a company that does not not need a permit, to do this you must read the terms and conditions .  The uk government is not in control of the terms and conditions imposed by individual EU companies
