Have had a car in Spain for many years & paid annual car tax by DD.

Buying a brand new car from a main dealer in the next month or so.

The car has not yet been manufactured yet.

I am aware that whoever owns a car on January 1st pays the annual tax.

What happens with a brand new car ?

Does the dealership pay the tax on my behalf ?

So I actually end up paying two lots of car tax ?

When we bought a new car three years ago, it came with the road tax paid for the current year. We bought it in September and the road tax for the following year in our area was payable from July. By this time our car was now registered in our name and address with our local town hall, so in July we went in and paid the road tax for that year and set up direct debits for the future. You shouldn't be charged twice as the dealer can't sell a car that isn't taxed. It will depend on the time of the year that the car is handed over to you as to whether you have to pay sooner or later.
