If I have a British passport and a Irish passport, if you have an Eu passport will that make things a bit easier to stay in Spain even if it’s just for a shorter period! Is having a Eu passport give you a bit more freedom of movement when it comes to Spain?

Can I ask how you intend to get an Irish passport? I have one but just checking if you fit the criteria before you go down that route.

Well we’re hoping that because my gran and great gran parents are from Ireland that we qualify for a Irish passport, but I’m just off the phone with a woman from Spain who is saying because so many brits are applying for Irish passport, to move to Spain and that the Spanish economy is loosing out ,that things might get easier for British people to move back to Spain . Hopefully by the end of this year or next !, I’m just getting one foot forward two feet back , where trying to book a couple of weeks to come out to find some where to rent for three months, every where we look is booked .again just keep plodding on gives us more time here to keep learning Spanish , Im learning that because of the back log for Irish passports it can take up to 30 months,

ok. It's not that simple or cheap to get an Irish passport unless you meet a certain criteria. In your case because it's your Gran who was Irish you would first have to apply for Irish citizenship through descent. The cost of that would be 278 euros and the timescale is 12 to 18 months. Then you would have to apply for your Irish passport which would be another 75 euros and takes around 6 weeks. You will need a lot of paperwork to send to them, Birth, Marriage, Death etc. I know all this because my Mother was Irish and although I was born and lived in the UK all of my life so far, I am deemed by birth-right to be an Irish citizen so all I needed was all the paperwork for a passport, my Daughter on the other hand wants an Irish passport, but she has to apply for citizenship first. I wouldn't bank on someone telling you that the Spanish might change the rules for the Brits, it's just wishful thinking in my opinion.

Honestly it does yeah we’re finding out how long it’s all going take , and yeah having to go through a lot of birth certificates and death certificates somethings we don’t know so had to contact family in Montreal and Ontario, to get more information on names and dates, but you just have to keep going for some sun , it be so easy if we won the lottery lol thank you it’s definitely not going to easy, but one must plod on , search every avenue, would have been so much easier if he had done it four years ago , thanks again asking other people who are going through the same things helps a lot thanks again Hugh

I have just received notification that my Irish citizenship is about to be processed after 26 months, this is based on my Irish Grandfather. I have just paid a fee of about €280. I now have to wait for the documentation confirming my Citizenship. I then have to apply for my passport! Of course Covid has held things up, it may be quicker now.

I was born in Ireland, so I have always been an Irish citizen and have had a UK and an Irish passport for years.
I'm an EU citizen living in Spain.
It was not so easy for my wife. She had to go down the grandparent entitlement route. First submitting loads of documents to support Irish citizenship entitlement and once that was sorted applying for a passport.
All that took nearly a year, 5 years ago!
But, hey ho. We're both EU citizens & have freedom of movement in the EU.

I think you will find that you are a EU tax resident with a Irish passport...not a EU citizen.

I am an EU citizen living in Spain.
I pay income tax in Spain, not the UK. I also pay the IBI every year.
If I moved to France or Germany, I would pay my income tax there.
When in Rome ...etc.
