I think you will find that you are a EU tax resident with a Irish passport...not a EU citizen.

There's no such thing as an EU tax resident. You generally pay your taxes in the country where you live and/or work. Even third-country UK citizens living permanently in Spain are Spanish (EU) tax residents!

Er. I believe that is what I said.

Just to make it a bit clearer. I will express it differently.

1. I am an Irish citizen. Ireland is in the EU. Therefore I am an EU citizen. I have an EU passport, issued in Ireland..

I also happen to be a UK citizen. I have a UK passport, issued in the UK.

2. I pay taxes due in the country that I reside in. That's Spain. I am a Fiscal Resident in Spain. I pay no tax in Ireland or the UK.

3. If I move to another EU country, I will pay my taxes there.

Tony1948,

What you have is dual citizenship, i.e. Irish and English….your Irish passport allows you to live in Spain (or any other EU) without the restrictions imposed on ‘Third County’ citizens……but I don’t think that makes you an EU citizen, it does make you a citizen of an EU country other than those of which you hold a passport. But maybe one day the EU will amalgamate and expect us all to have EU citizenship with an EU passport.

I am an EU citizen living in Spain.

I pay income tax in Spain, not the UK. I also pay the IBI every year.

If I moved to France or Germany, I would pay my income tax there.

When in Rome ...etc.

Thanks yeah ,don’t mind paying tax, health insurance and anything else I need to pay as long as I get a bit of sun lol

A British subject that also has a Irish passport  is only permitted to live in the so called EU for183 days out of any 365 day period they are also required to have full medical insurance as they can't use a British GHIC ..if you have a British passport you  can stay in Spain for 90 days out of any 180 day period  totaling 180 days out of any 365 day period you can use the British GHIC and get free medical care whilst in Spain.

if British /Irish passport holder stays in any part of the EU for longer than 183 days they will need to pay taxes to that EU country .. another thing you have got to take into consideration is that Spain does not recognise dual nationality also a citizenship has got to be applied for usually after 10 years you also need to take a citizenship test /speak Spanish ...

Hi Hugh,

Your Irish passport has exactly the same facilities than an EU passport will give you.

In fact the Irish passpirt is much more valuable worldwide especialky in US where it opens many doors because of the respect for Ireland and everything Irish

Best wishes

Seamus

Why not just live with the consequences of Brexit……

That's rather unfair, I'm sure you didn't mean it that way.  - the guy just wants to visit Spain. It doesn't mean he can't come here just because of Brexit. The Spanish want as many tourists as they can get & UK citizens have always been welcome here. Only a few details have changed.
