Hi Mitch

My understanding is that Spain & other EU countries could allow non EU home owners a visa that allows them to spend more time in there holiday homes without an EU law change, the current 90 day rule only applies to EU Countries who have ...

...signed the Schengen Agreement so if a Spainish holiday home owner wanted to holiday in France for 14 days this would automatically reduce the time that they can spend in there Spanish holiday home, but they can visit a EU Country like Croatia as they are not currently a member of the Schengen Agreement without affecting there 90 days in Spain so there is scope for different rules within the EU community.

As for the UK rejoining the EU well that's not going to happen I agree lots of people didn't bother to vote in the referendum but as a demecratic country the Goverment must abide by that result, and before anybody asks we owned property in Spain before the referendum took place and we voted remain in that referendum.

We have no intention of selling our holiday home but I will continue to campaign for the 180 day rule as we pay our Spanish non residence tax on our Villa and contribute to the Spanish, Mazarron & Murcian area economy and would happily pay extra on our tax for a visa that allows us more time in Spain, bars and restaurants will survive but I'm convinced  that in the future the 90 day rule will have an impact on what countries people decide to buy holiday homes in future years.

Totally agree

180 Days in Spain

This is a great Facebook Page to join if you own a property in Spain and use it as a holiday home, under new post Brexit Rules we can only spend 90 days in 180 days in Spain or any other EU Country but EU Residents can spend up to 180 days continuously in the U.K, members of this page are campaig...

...ning to get this rule changed for home owners like us to able to spend 180 days continuously in Spain.

These are NOT new Eu rules, these rules go back many many years, they are the rules that non-Eu citizens wanting to spend time in the Schengen countries including Spain have had to follow. 90 days in, 90 days out etc. etc.

The British people voted to move out of the Eu and this is just one of consequences.

Sadly, I think you are tilting at windmills, if you believe you are going to get the entire Europe-wide Schengen rules changed on this.

The 90 day rule makes Florida look so much more attractive for the winter.

I don't get it - I personally am not asking for any rules to be changed for us, just that we have parity. I have read with much interest that many UK residents would like to spend the winter in warmer climes This may well exceed 90 days - what is the harm? they are spending their money in spanish supermarkets keeping the prices down, giving many cafes and restaurants their business. Without these snowbirds your  cost of living would rocket. Be grateful and hope that parity is allowed.

Exactly the main purpose the 180 day group is to get parity, in normal times me and my wife go to Camposol every English School Holiday period which amounts to about 90 days in a calendar year and I will normally have maybe another 10 days on top of that, My view and I've stated this many times since I posted the 180 days post is simple, we pay our non residence tax we have a Spanish Car when we are in Camposol we shop locally not only food but for DIY we use local tradesmen we enjoy eating out so we are giving something back to the local Spanish economy and I would be more than happy to pay a little more non residence tax on a visa system just to have the option of a longer stay in our Vila if we wanted to in the future.

If the EU were to change 90 day rule for one country it would have to apply to all 3rd countries. Not likely to happen. Unfortunately we've lost control of many things which we benefited from during EU membership. Even if the mantra "Spain needs us" we're true, they can't do anything about it as overall they EU agreement would be required. That ship has sailed.

We could think about rejoining in a few years, and solve all this hassle.
