Good afternoon Campasol.

My partner and I already own an apartment on CDA and have done for a year now.

we want to take early retirement and to move out permanantly, how do we go about acquiring residency.

What  is the amount of time you have to reside in Spain to qualify for residency,

How easy is it to get, and what necessary documents are required.

We have already got a Spanish bank account, is there any reason that you cannot also maintain a UK bank account.

Do you need a certain amount of bank statements to be shown, if so which ones Spanish or British.

Any other help and advice would be most welcome in order to make the move over sooner rather than later.

Thank you in advance.

G.

Hi my lawyer told me last week that at the moment the authorities are not issuing appointments for residency. He thinks they are waiting to see what happens on 31st October. If we leave the EU it will be harder and a longer process to obtain residency. You are best obtaining advise from a lawyer or fiscal rep such as Debbie Shaw.

The UK Govt.has not decided what it will do for expats in the case of No Deal. If there is a deal, then there will be a transition period and things will gradually be sorted out. Spain will wait to hear from the UK what the UK will do for Spanish citizens in the UK in the case of No Deal..

Keep in touch with Citizens Advice Bureau Spain (great organisation) and do NOT believe implicitly anything you may read on social media from "armchair experts". You can also check out the UK Govt website.

Click on Jim's Guides on the RHS of this page, lots of information there too.

Re bank accounts, my husband has retained his UK bank account with no problem, it has been registered to our Spanish address for 13 years now.

When we went for our Residencia 6 months ago (rather late!) we took a copy of our Spanish bank account statement for the last 6 months and highlighted our incoming pension payments. They kept that.

We also took our annual UK pension statements to show how much we were receiving (in sterling). They were not interested in those, so I would guess that they would probably not be interested in the balance of your English account. But you can never take too much paperwork to an official Spanish appointment!!

I am unsure now about the resdincy procedure as i did mine a while back with no trouble at all, but with brexit and few peoples comments  there does not seem to be a clear picture.

Bank accounts however....this was never a problem for me when i moved to spain. I was able to keep the uk account and never had issues.

you would have to declare savings etc once you are a resident once you hit a certain threshold.

Hi, we obtained our residencias within 2 weeks of being here in April. Our solicitor could not obtain appointments but Debbie Shaw was able to and pulled out all the stops for us. Need up to date Padron, your deeds and private health insurance (if under retirement age). Debbie is there every step of the way. We wanted to obtain prior to Brexit just in case and so glad we did. Living the dream. Good luck x
