The Status Quo is so much simpler. Just remain EU citizens. It's delusional to think that the few million €s that we spend in Spain will have any effect when it comes to negotiating international treaties, as it was thinking UK was indispensable to Europe.

I was told that no expat can stay in Spain for more than 180 days unless he becomes a resident. Isn't it the same rule for everyone?

If you go to the costa blanca forum and type in jims guides , there is info and links to the actual rules. worth a visit if you are unsure. and the government (uk) web site has a lot of up to date info.

“Just remain EU citizens. “

Would only be possible if the UK stayed a member of the EU.....

Until Brexit is resolved and terms agreed, whether we stay or leave, anything can change or be up for negotiation

I am resident in France pay my tax here and because I have French pension as well pay my health pension here not S1 . Did have holiday house on Camposol was aware that a lot of Brits in Spain broke the rules as far as residence is cocerned. The home office figure of 500,000 british resident in Spain reflects this. Passports will be checked after Brexit.

I would suggest that over the last 5 to 10 years or so you have seen changes made by the Spanish authorities in general implying they are clamping down on a lot of previous loopholes

Brexit in whatever form it takes will only accelerate that so expect changes and tightening up on the previous loose rules which allowed many people to "cut corners".....

The UK may have left the EU last week, but you'll still be able to travel to Europe as normal and comply with 181 days stay limit in a year.

The transition period means there’s absolutely no change to travel in Europe for the rest of this year. Your passport and EHIC card are still valid, and pet travel regulations remain unchanged.

We should refrain from finding ourselves in a panic mode as things would pan out as the weeks go by. Just watch, listen to the latest on Brexit. Above all, come back to this forum from time to time for the latest.

Hasta luego

It's not as clear cut as that! 90 days is the maximum stay for non-residents and anyone wishing to stay longer, should apply for residencia. Anyone staying more than the 180 days must become a tax resident. After the transition period end on December 31st 2020, Britain will become a non-EU country and will therefore be subject to the ETIAS Schengen/EU rules. Anyone overstaying the 90 day period within the entire EU/Schengen area, could be fined, deported and their entry banned for up to 5 years. Passports will be shown at all entries and exits and the sophisticated computer systems that all airports now have installed, will immediately indicate anyone overstaying, as they do now for other non-EU citizens. The transition agreement does give British citizens the same rights as they currently have, with the exception of freedom of movement but although it's likely that British citizens will still have reciprocal health care and pension updates after December, as non-EU citizens, they will have more hoops to jump through and have to show a much higher income that those from within the EU and many people will not qualify.
