The shengen rules only kick in next year . As for freedom of movement and other rule changes only time will tell but I am quite sure that the Spanish government appreciates how much the uk puts into their coffers so will also have to give that due consideration

Spain is just one of 27 countries that make up the bloc. They will not be in a position to offer something to one country and not to the others. British tourism has always been an important part of the Spanish economy but even as we speak, tourism and immigration from other countries is slowly growing and towns that 20 years ago were predominantly occupied by British immigrants are now filling with Scandinavians and citizens from the countries that joined the EU more recently and are now emigrating to Spain too. Britain was a valued member of the bloc but chose to go it alone in a last attempt to bring back the "good old days", which were never that good in the first place! Things change and time stops for no man!

So you consider people from the UK as "immigranrs" but people from other countries are "citizens".....

No idea what will happen over the coming months but personally I do not like your tone or attitude when all I am simply looking for is assistance so  I will not be responding to your posts in the future

Thank you for pointing out that I hadn't included the citizens of other countries as part of the current wave of immigrants to Spain. I have now edited my previous comment. Anyone who relocates permanently to another country is an immigrant but some people prefer to use the word ex-pat. I am a British immigrant who has lived permanently in Spain for almost 37 years - but I am also a British citizen.

Clearly no one, including the respective governments, have no clear idea

Totally agree that the Brits bring so much to the Spanish economy that they cannot afford to throw everyone out

I suspect some changes will be made and probably we may have to pay some token charges but I do not anticipate anything radical at all

Spain & EU have rules for EU citizens and other rules for non-EU citizens. Its naive to think they'll just change them for UK immigrants.

Do not think it is naive at all and was reading earlier this week how Portugal is looking to retain the current day quota

It would seem they could work together with Spain,  Italy and even France as they all rely on people with 2and homes and tourism, to varying degrees, to sustain their economies

Oh.... or why doesn't the EU just leave all the current benefits without expecting the UK to pay for them? That's what the British government wants, isn't it?

The UK public has voted twice to leave the EU and so should be expected to leave under some, if not all, of our conditions

It is now that many countries of the EU realise just what an impact this will have and many are already looking to make conciliatory noises

Macron is in the minority and his hard stance not only threatens the so called harmony of the EU but of France itself

The EU is beginning to understand and appreciate the funds that the ukcontributed to their "economy" and it is a big hit for them to swallow.

Compromise is the name of the game but the EU gas to understand that the UK voted for them NOT to have control over our policies and decisions

As can be seen by the number of agreements already signed, many of the rest of the world are more than happy to deal with the UK  as an independent nation once again

We do exactly as you do, maintaining 2 houses, Spain and UK. The freedom to move around as one pleases has been eroded due to Brexit.

Discussions must have been going on for months between the EU and the UK with regards to the financial benefits the expats bring with them to European economy.

I know that the opportunities are still there for each one of us to explore and continue to campaign that Expats do matter to Spanish economy as financial contributors as well as Europe as a whole.

This is a trying moment for us all, especially to those who love Spain as a country to reside.

As far as I am aware nothing yet has been set in stone and talks continue

I am sure that many things will change with Brexit but exactly what remains to be seen. However, we are planning next years visits in a different way to what we gave done previously

Everyone in Spain that I have spoken to, including residents, firmly believes that even if it takes a year or 2, that freedom of movement in Spain and probably Europe will have to revert back to what we consider normal today otherwise the EU will flounder

Only my opinion, but the UK and Spain have strong historical ties. Only the other day the Spanish foreign minister was pleading for a deal to be done.

I think the Spanish goverment would like to do as much as possible for expats, but you may find that their hands are tied by the EU regulators in Brussels.
