Recently we were hit by a large 'council tax' bill (our bank said it was this) which our solicitor should have set up for us when we bought our villa.  We are selling this villa and buying another on Camposol and when we get a solicitor for this, we will be making sure its set up for the future.  Could anyone shed some light on what this will be so that we can budget it in to our next holiday home?

We have a 3bed-3bath villa on 600 meter plot, our council tax (ibi) for last year was 330 euros.

Thank you very much for that information.  I am curious as to why this has suddenly happened, reading on other forums about this, it seems that Mazarron council are taking their time registering all villas on Camposol or that it might be that as they decide to adopt sectors, it is only then that the owners are liable - we are on Sector C.  I'm curious as to why some people pay this tax and others don't.  Not that it matters much now because the next time we visit, we will be off down to the Ayuntamiento to register to pay by DD for future years.

Responsibility for collection of the IBI has been transferred from Mazarron to Murcia and this has caused some problems but it is still the owners responsibility to ensure they pay it. If you miss out on paying they will add a fine to the sum owed. For peace of mind go DDR.

We had some friends who had a holiday home on Camposol had it for many years and they never paid IBI it was not for the want of trying too pay they were quite willing even went down to the  town hall office more than once and were told their property was not on the plans and would they take a photograph of their villa and bring it down to the office you just could not make it up they have long sold up now have paid some back IBI

There is also a non-residents tax which I understand you have to pay on holiday homes based on the IBI valuation.

Yes, make sure you are registered for Non-residents Tax or you will get a big fine.

One thing I'm unclear about regarding non-residents tax is if you sell your property in Spain the tax office hold 3% to cover outstanding taxes and then you have to prove you don't owe anything to get it back. I've read this can take over 1 year and you need to keep a bank account open so incur fees etc....so is it worth paying the NR tax anyway? If you pay it and then they hold back 3% are you essentially paying the tax twice? If you don't pay it and they hold back 3% when you sell, that can go towards it.
