I am buying a brand new car in Spain at the moment.

The car dealership has told me that I need to be on the Padron to complete the sale.

I am not on the Padron.

According to my research it is illegal for a non resident to be on the Padron now.

The link below is a bit long winded but verifies my research.

How on earth do I explain this situation to the car dealership ??

Anybody else come across this ??

The padron certificate is the easiest way for the dealer to register the car and pay the road tax, so as ever they will take the simplest route. Can you not show proof of your address - lease/escritura/bank account/driving licence etc? We bought our first car in Spain when we first moved over and were not on the padron and had no problems - pre Brexit way back in 2005!

Maybe ask on the N332 trafico Facebook page?

Thanks for that.

Might ask on the N332 website.

Hi Roland,

Another option is the CAB Spain site. The issue of non residents on the padron has been discussed many times and it is a complete no no. Their clear advice is for any non resident to immediately remove themselves. Follow up discussions from people in a similar situation to you have recommended using bank statements, escritura’s, IBI, water and electricity bills etc to prove your address.

Good luck

You should not be on the Padrón if you are not a permanent resident. Being on the Padrón could result in you being considered as a resident and therefore a tax resident and liable for taxation. Regardless of what your car dealer says, you DO NOT NEED to be on the Padrón to buy a car, new or otherwise. Thousands of non-residents buy cars and properties every day without one and have no problems. Check out the various articles on the matter on the Citizens Advice Bureau Spain's website and read some of the many threads on their Facebook group, where many people are also being given the wrong information by their car dealers / estate agents etc.!

@Mags44

As I said in my original post I know it is illegal to be on the Padron as I am a non resident.

The problem is explaining this to the new car dealership who are insisting that I am on the Padron.

I think the way forward might be to email Mazarron Town Hall & get the answer from them.

I will try & find an email address for them.

I could then send the email to the car dealership.

Hi Roland,

You could try mailing our local councillor Silvana Buxton and elicit her help with the town hall. Her email is [email protected]

Hope that helps

The dealer will undoubtedly use a gestor to handle registrations etc. I would tell the dealer that if they cannot get them to sort it out then you will have to buy elsewhere - it is the trader who should be sorting this out, not you!
