... a complex (golf etc) whereby security is in place and swallowing the extra costs incurred rather than taking a gamble with potential squatters breaking in. 

As the property would be a holiday home, we would be in UK most of the time so it is quite worrying so would appreciate any advice on this

Unfortunately we have squatters in Sucina, plus smoking drugs, they also bypass electric and water. Also very abusive and very noisy, sometimes up to 1to 3 am, with no consideration to neighbours. I honestly cannot believe Spain except these situations

...an take a long time to go through the legal processes to get your property back. If you do a Google search on okupas, you can see more information Including adverts for companies who offer services to remove them if they squat in your property. There are over 4,000 houses on Camposol and a very small number of incidents involving squatters. The key is to have good security, cameras, day/night lights and neighbours you can call or ask to check your property regularly. This will also assist in preventing burglaries, which are more prevalent than squatters, although no worse than in any large village or small town. Hope that helps.
