Hi All,

My wife and I are planning to come to Los Alcazoras late, this year, 2020 or early next year, 2021 but are required to get private medical insurance,  I have seen a recommendation before but unable to find it again, We are both retired and will be 66, No real medical issues except for creaking bones and short tempers. Can anyone recommend a cheap but OK company please,

Thanks in Advance,

Tom and Bernadette Hudson,

If you can gain Residency this year, at age 66, you don't need private health insurance

yes you DO need private medical insurance unless you are in receipt of your UK state pension.(then you need your S1).....not just over 65....thats if you are staying permanently and can apply before 31/12!

Your request wasn't very clear..like are you moving to Spain to become a resident ...or are you just renting as a holiday maker.. after January 2021 what ever the case may be Early retirement / OAP getting a UK pension you will need private health care to holiday or be a Resident in Spain ... the E11 or S1 cards will no longer be excepted in Spain .

Hi FF, please correct me if I'm wrong, but I'm on the understanding that so long as an agreement/ deal is reached, you only need private medical insurance for 12 months and then (if of retirement age) apply for Spanish NHS protection.  Likewise, if under retirement age, same detail but then after 12 months use the option to pay the €60 or so monthly into their Nat Ins scheme, untill you reach retirement age??

At the moment after a years residency you can join the Convenio especiale  but its not available in every area.....doesnt include prescription chearges and increases dramaticlly over 65

this is Murcias monthly charge....

Si el suscriptor tiene menos de 65 años: cuota mensual de 60 euros.

Si el suscriptor tiene 65 o más años: cuota mensual de 157 euros.

The deal has already been done on health care in Spain for UK Residents...the UK government will only pay for those UK OAPs that are Residents of Spain before January 2021 ...after this date the UK government has already stated that they will no longer fund the N.I contributions into the Spanish system to cover you for treatment in Spain... I have also read that the E11 health card will no longer be accepted anywhere in the EU after January 2021 ...so you will need private holiday insurance to cover you for the duration of your holiday...so it looks like the current UK OAPs that are Residents of Spain will be the last ones to receive free N.I health care treatment  funded by the UK government..so I guess you won't be seeing any new UK OAPs applying to become Residents after January 2021... unless they can fund the private Health Care insurance themselves...all this information is available on the net ... UK government web site.

I have spent so much time looking at Gov.uk website  & many others trying to fully understand healthcare post Brexit issues   ( & unless I’m being thick - which is entirely possible!) I cannot find  I simply cannot understand how this will apply to people like myself -  I will be  63 in Nov 2020 & intended  to move to Spain this autumn ( Murcia appeals) & claim residency before Jan 2021. I am hoping to find PT work as a TEFL teacher which would entitle  me to healthcare but understand I will need private healthcare if I can’t get work & cannot apply to join the national scheme until I have 12 months residency .

The Gov U.K. website states “ If you’re living in Spain before the end of 2020, your rights to access healthcare in Spain will stay the same for as long as you remain legally resident. This means you’ll continue to get state healthcare in Spain from 1 January 2021 on the same basis as a Spanish resident. You’ll also have the right to apply for a UK S1 if you start drawing a UK State Pension“ . I understood this to mean that so long as was able to satisfy the residency criteria before the cut off date in the event I was unsuccessful in finding work I would still be able to join the national scheme after 12 months AND when I hit state pension age in 3 years time I could then apply for U.K. S1.

The above posts by Zacdog & Frequent Flyer indicate I’ve completely misunderstood this situation & will never be eligible to access the Spanish Healthcare system ( unless through work etc. But this certainly isn’t clear ( at least to me!) on the U.K. gov website so any advice much appreciated.
