Hi all,

Been busy reading up on the forum as don’t want to make the same mistake twice so doing my research this time as last time information wasn’t quite as available as now.

I am a British expat living in Cyprus, but finally got the ok from hubby last night that it is time to move on. We have a lot of minor repairs to do to our villa after this year’s bad winter but hey ho that’s life but need to sell it first.

From my point of view all my friends have left the island and I am now finding it hard to make new ones as none of them live near and to be honest fifteen years with no one next door or round the corner to have a natter to has got to me recently. Before I was one of fifteen ladies who lunch and enjoyed it enormously.

How lonely we are has been brought to the fore for a number of reasons recently, namely hubby falling off a ladder and me being unable to lift him up or get help from the neighbours. Asking for ten minutes help on another occasion which ended up with me trying to help hubby lift three big compressed sheets of wood up on the roof of our wood store room has made me realise I now need Brits to chat to, socialise with etc. I don’t want to go back to UK at all as don’t think I could cope with Big Brother and the violence nor the weather.

I am about to get my state pension so need to look into health care provisions etc.

I will be asking lots of questions so please be patient with me if they seem trivial to you but really mean a big thing to me because of our experiences here, especially when it comes to my fur kids.

Anyway any tips, suggestions etc gratefully received & thanks in advance.

Trish

PS sorry for long post

Hi Trish and welcome

Well it sounds like you are looking in the right place if you are looking for friends and a great community. You certainly wont be lonely on Camposol. We are newbies and people have been so helpful and welcoming. There are many groups you can join. I recently attended a ladies charity day at the golf club house and was invited to sit and join a group of 20 ladies. Ask away with questions as there is always someone here to answer and help. Good luck.

Hi Trish and welcome

We bought a property on Camposol earlier this year, so we could drive over with our fur baby, instead of putting her through the stress of flying coincidently, to Cyprus!

We have not regretted it one bit.  Everyone has been so friendly, welcoming and helpful.  We have lovely neighbours and everyone helps out if there is a problem.   Or to mention the fantastic weather.  As you have read there are quite a few groups to join.

We have driven out and about and have found many great places and friendly people.

We agree with Alioops you can always ask away with questions someone will have a answer.

Wish you good luck and hope to hear from you when you have arrived!

Carol

Thanks Carol, how are you finding walking your fur kid there?

I know might seem a silly question but at the moment I have to spend half an hour with both my fur kids after a walk to get the grass seeds out of their coats and so many times pull them out from between their toes where they have gone into their skin. After fifteen years it is getting to me lol

Hi Trish

We have not had any problems with grass seeds as there is little grass around.  The area is mainly covered with small bushes.  The ground is a greyish colour, the only problem we have had is when it rains it goes soft and we have had to wash her paws when we return.

Another thing we have learnt from the forum is about processional caterpillars.  Which are around February-March.  These are dangerous to dogs due to the hairs on their backs and immediate attention is required by a vet.  They are not nice for humans as they may cause an allergic reaction.

The caterpillars are mainly found in pine trees you can see the nests quite easily. Around Feb-Mar they drop from the trees  hibernate and then become butterflies. They are called processional as they link together in long lines.  You can look up this in more detail on the web.

We avoid any areas with pine trees around these months.

Hope this is helpful 😁

Carol

Thank you Carol, I am quite aware of the processionary caterpillars as we have them here. So from your post I am taking it that it is quite safe to walk a dog in Camposol, no local dogs roaming the streets on their own as the lazy owners haven’t trained them and can’t be bothered walking them. A bit of dirt is a godsend to what I put up with here 😂

I have to carry a stick around when I walk my two as they have been attacked so many times and I will protect them to the best of my ability hence the walking stick. Don’t get me wrong I hate hurting any animal but the mothering instinct in me comes out. Thankfully just waving the stick and shouting has worked so far.
