You will need a visa to be able to work.
If you will be working for someone, then they have to provide information for the visa, as in a firm job contract, etc. In certain cases, they have to prove why they are intending to employ you instead of an existing Spanish resident.
If you intend to be self-employed, you need to apply for an 'autonomo' visa, which will require a full business plan and contingency funds to live off if the business does not achieve the income forecast. This needs to be renewed annually.
In general, unemployment in Spain is very high - 15% overall, but as high as 40% in some areas; and Spanish wages are generally only 2/3rds of those in the UK.
