Hi,
We have been driving from west NL to Camposol and reverse for some 8 years, so are passing by Calais.
We have tried basically all alternate routes over the years ,but find this the best route (provided you are prepared to take the tollroads in France):
Calais, Rouen, Le Mans, Poitiers, Bordeaux, San Sebastian, Pamplona, Zaragoza, Teruel,Valencia, Alicante, Murcia.
(In Spain just some short stretches of toll road after crossing the border until Pamplona; from Valencia follow the A7 and NOT the AP7 tollroad).
This route is always very quiet, basically all 4 lane motorway and crossing the Pyrenees is a lot easier than elsewhere. There is an alternative road ( RN : roads without toll) following basically the same route, but that will add days! to the trip while single carriage way only ,limited speed and loads of HGV´s and roundabouts.
You will find through the various route planners that the route via Paris, Montpellier,Le Perthus, Barcelona etc. is some 50 km shorter but you almost certainly have to face delays at both Paris and Barcelona circular roads, which at best are substantial plus more toll road costs from ES border until Valencia.
Further, if you are looking for sleepover addresses where your dog(s) are allowed to stay in your room ( we always travel with ours) , you will find that in France to be quite easy (usually for a small oncost e.g. 5€), but in Spain almost impossible .
Hope this helps!
