We are trying to xfr names on the sale of a car and have been told the previous owner owed money to the government and as we are still legally the owners then we are liable for the amount.
Is this the law in spain 😱🤷♀️

Yes I afraid so. When you purchase you should have gone to an assessors to have ownership changed with the previous owner.

We did and we were told at that time there was no outstanding debt

Sorry to hear that, go back to assessors and find out what they were playing at.
When we come back to spain we certainly will. meanwhile we’ve had to settle the last owners debt to xfr ownership 😱😱
