It is not an optional thing: to stay longer than 3 months you must register with the police as a foreigner. Once you have lived in Spain for 183 days in any calendar year you are tax resident and must pay Spanish taxes on your world wide income, including theoretical income from renting any property in the UK. Once resident you are not permitted to drive any vehicle not registered in Spain. To have your residence approved you must prove that you have health cover and sufficient income to not be a burden on the state.

Time spent here will be much easier to be monitored once the UK leaves the EU, so the clock is ticking for those hiding under the counter!

You have not given enough information if you are looking for help and tips on moving to. Spain..are you under UK retirement age if so all the information you require is on the net .I have also read some of your previous post ..on other threads and your calculations ...and as I previously said you will need a minimum of 1500 euro's per month for 2 people .and that's if you have bought outright.for instance you will not be able to feed to adult's on 50 euro's per week (3.5 euros per person per day ) petrol for your car is the same price as the UK .

And do remember that thanks to Brexit there is no absolutely solid infirmation, merely promises and speculation.

I’m not of retirement age. I’m 51. We have a villa on camposol bought outright.

I have a U.K. friend in Almeria who has owned there for years but she doesn’t want residencia so my question is what is the pros and cons. Whether to apply for it or not

Again there is NO CHOICE if you live here for more than 90 days......You say your friend has owned for years but she cannot be living here legally without residencia...even as a non resident you must pay non resident tax.....pros and cons dont come into it....if you want to be an illegal immigrant then dont apply for residencia and wait to be caught and fined! If you want to sleep at night go through the proper legal process!! Plenty here have lived for years undervthe radar but sooner or later it will come back to bite them!! Brexit may change everything for illegals!!

Do the right thing!! Read all the info on the CAB Spain website.

not true, you have to be fiscal resident, after 183 days,

you DO NOT have to prove you have health care,

after 1 year you can apply for resindency and convenio at the same time,

you have to prove you have lived here for a year,be on the padron, etc

this would be on individual basis

eg pre exsisting conditions ,that you cannot get private health care ,in which there are many,

can then go on spanish system, pre exsisting conditions would be thn covered,

the poster advising cab spain should look themselves,

ps you can live here for 6month without having to go a police station, its called being a job seeker !

Most of the previous post is inaccurate or incomplete, for example the 183 days is within a calendar year, so theoretically you could leave the UK on your way to Spain (which is when the clock starts ticking) on the 2nd July, sign on the register of foreigners before 90 days, and return to the UK by the 2nd July the following year (1st if a leap year) and not become tax resident. Time here is not the only factor as HMRC will regard you as UK tax-resident if your main residence and source of income is in the UK, with the Spanish taxman taking the same stance from the other angle, so if your family lives in Spain and your main residence is here they will gave a case for wanting tax on your worldwide earnings.

Lots of different views here but appreciate all the input.

My plan is to move over next year. Like I say, I’m 51 and the wife is 50. So our base income will come from a property in the uk which is rented. We will look for work but it won’t be a necessity to live. The possibility of free healthcare will be massive to us as on my previous living expenses I’d included private healthcare costs which I may now not have to fund.

So, I’m still unclear having read all the helpful posts which option to take
