Hi all

My husband and myself are looking at moving to Spain for a year or two with our then three year old (he is from New Zealand and I am from Spain). We are looking at several possible areas to settle in and Cartagena has caught our eye.

For those who have now been in Cartagena for a while, I was wondering if you wouldn't mind sharing your settle in experience with me. We are looking for a non touristy area but not far from the coast where our wee one can have a nice experience in Spain and immerse him in the language and culture for a couple of years.

What are good areas to live in Cartagena? We again are looking not at a resort sort of place but more of a local experience.

one other thing...
How hard/easy is it to make friends in the area? We are very well traveled and have worked/lived in many countries so we are very open and adaptable. Both my husband and I speak Spanish already so I hope it will also be helpful in mingling in with both locals and expats alike :) Are the locals in the area generally warm to people coming from overseas to the point of creating friendships? (I come from an area in the North of Spain where although people are super friendly to outsiders, getting to know them on a friend status is a lot more complicated - hence my question )

Any feedback would be greatly appreciated!
Thanks

Floki

Hello,

I can only answer the second part of your question. I know the Cartagena area quite well but not enough to advise you on any particular town or area.

However, on the subject of the friendliness or otherwise of the Spanish in Murcia I don't think you need to be concerned at all. When we came here  almost 20 years ago we had limited Spanish but, even so, we were made very welcome and that has never changed. We now live near Lorca and before this we were around 40 minutes south of Cartagena, two different areas of Murcia but similar in friendliness towards outsiders.  We've always made an effort to join Spanish groups and clubs and in doing so have made friends. The people in the south of Spain are known for their warmth and we've found this to be true.

I was brought up in NZ  many years ago and life here in many ways has the same laid back attitude I remember.

If I can help any further feel free to private message me.

Hi Floki

Thank you for sharing! I really appreciate it.

You are absolutely right about the similarities in the lifestyle and attitude towards life of Kiwis and Spaniards!

If you are ok with it I will PM you if any questions come up as I research the area further - by the way, was it the area of Mazarron by any chance you lived in before the Lorca area? It looks interesting too (at least on a google search it does... lol)

Thanks again!
