Hi,

We currently own a holiday home in Puerto de Mazarron but now want to retire to Spain and buy a larger property away from a tourist area. Cehegin seems to tick all the boxes but we have never been. We are both in our 60’s so my simple question is regarding the area - a nice place to live or not for a couple of oldies like us ? I have to say it looks it.

Thanks in advance for your help.

We have lived here for over 14 years, out in the country, and we love it. I have written info about the town before on this forum so if you search this site you should find it.

Hi Simon

We recently spent 1 week in Cehegin and viewed a few properties.  The town and surrounding areas are just amazing.  The people are really friendly.  We are buying a holiday home but hope to move out full time in the next 5 years.

Cehegin can be quite hilly but once you know your way around it is easy to avoid the steep hills.  I feel in love with the place as soon as I saw it from the motorway.

You will definitely need to learn Spanish to live there.  People really try to speak English but it one of our top priorities now.

It is very well located.. under 1 hour to Murcia, close to the airport and also close enough to the coast and mountains for day trips.

Good luck with your search.

Karen

Good luck. By the way, you might already know this but, when we first looked at this area, we had no idea how to pronounce Cehegin.

If you say it slowly it's: Theh - eh - HEEN.

😊😊😊

Hello. My husband and I are from.Ireland and are moving permanently to Spain in next month. We are very open to any region around the South of Spain or East. We have saw a lovely country property in Cehigan, and want some advice from others who live there maybe. Is there many English speaking shops, villages, generally around. Is there beaches nearby? And how far is Murcia itself. We don't want to be in an urbanisation, but would.like to maybe be near ex pats for work opportunities. If anyone can help that would be appreciated. Also what is the climate like all year round? Is it cooler than Almeria for instance? And are the winters mild with little rain?

Hi,

English speaking shops - generally no, this is a very Spanish area but there is the odd person who does speak English and children learn it. For anything 'official', Doctor/hospital appointments and the like, you would need to provide an interpreter if your Spanish isn't up to it.

I think the easiest beach to get to is Los Narejos at the northern edge of Los Alcazares, just over an hour and dual carriageway all the way, bit less if you've got a heavy right foot! Going further south and a different route, Aguilas is lovely.

Murcia city is about 45 minutes. It's a lovely city and there are several retail centres on the outskirts, Nueva Condomina is easy to get to.

No urbanisations here, most British live in the country, a few in town.

I hardly dare give an opinion on the climate after this year!! After a year of drought we had huge storms back in the spring followed by a long hot summer. Usually we would get the occasional day in July/August in the high 30s/low 40s. This year - several weeks. 'Normally' we have a dry winter, nights down to single figures (occasionally below zero), days can be in the 20s. Spring and autumn are when it is likely to rain, sometimes there is none. Summers are hot with the occasional storm.

Overall it is a lovely area. Cehegin has lots of history and there is a lot going on here. It is a fruit growing area, predominately apricots and peaches, also almonds and olives.
