Hi All,

Just got back to Cehegin after a prolonged absence due to International regulations. Prior to leaving last year, was burning cuttings from my olive trees and prunings during the September to April period, but now unofficially informed that ALL burning is now prohibited all year round.

Anyone have any knowledge of this, and possible official document that I can have as Reference?

Good to be back, but had a lot of work to do to bring our villa and land back as it should be!!!!!

Cliff and Xiaoyu.

It appears that what you have been told is correct. This is from La Opinion back in February:

Cehegín will enable a point to deposit agricultural burns - La Opinión de Murcia (laopiniondemurcia.es)

But, the local Police website still has the same information as before:

POLICIA LOCAL CEHEGIN: Autorizaciones de quema de restos agrícolas en Cehegín: (policiacehegin.blogspot.com)

We took out all our apricot trees earlier this year. The large finca next door to us did the same. We both had lots of fires and we are on a main road. This was in March I think. Nobody came to tell us off!!

It has been hot and dry for so long here the authorities will be quite rightly worried about fires getting out of control and starting a devastating wildfire. Look at Turkey & Greece.

Hi Kalli,

Appreciate the response, having spent some 160 euros on skips so far this week, rather keep the cuttings and burn in  a few months, meanwhile a trip to the local police for confirmation looks to be on the cards.

Thanks for the response, but looking for the regulations, we live a long way from the forests, in agricultural area, just need confirmation if we can burn after September. I understand that the new regulation is not due to the possibility of fire, but air pollution.

I don't think the Cehegin Police info has been updated for years. We used to go to the office in Begastri to get a licence, then one year we were told they were no longer issued, we haven't been back there since.

I haven't ever applied for a licence fin the past 5 years as we are rural, local neighbour is Spanish police, not anywhere near a forest, so according to the government regulations, no licence is required.

Your comment about updating the police is pretty accurate, but have been told that three farmers have been fined 600 euros, but this may be due to burning during the prohibited period.

Hi Peter

I would be very interested in what the police say as we also have a lot of tree cuttings to burn

Can you please let the group know when you have spoken to them

Thanks

From 1 June to 30 September - NO burning, that has always been the rule. However, we often have rain in September so fires then after substantial rain have never been a problem although strictly it would be illegal. A fire now would probably bring the Police/Civil Proteccion!!

Cliff's query was about a rule change prohibiting all burning, the article from La Opinion seems to corroborate what he has been told. A good thing to help the climate but a pain to have to take a trailer load to the Ecopark! Or hire a skip!
