Oh, if you are a historian, you will love this area. I am a Blue Badge guide in UK and spend all my spare time in this area. Cehegín has some amazing restaurants.
In the « old town »
El Sol is my favourite ( they won an award for the best tapa in the region last year)
And then there is the taberna mesoncico, they do wonderful tapas ( the “ensaladilla” and “sepia” are reknown)
Best paella : Rincón de Pedro
And many lovely cafés in the area around gran via
But also las moreras restaurants really good (in the « new » town.
As far as visiting is concerned. There is so much to see!
Apart from the local museum with reputedly the oldest Cristian cross, there is a beautiful tamplar Mary magdalene sculpture ( XIV C olive wood) in the church by the castle square,
And apart from Carvaca which is nearby, you also have Calasparra ( famous for it’s rice) and the sanctuary of the Esperanza.
Also, local artist Madalena organises the music and wine evening, once a month, local wine makers showcase their wine and she “pairs” them with music, mixture of classical, folk and even more modern music. She also has her workshop near the tourism office in Cehegin and you can see her art get local products there ( only a tiny selection it is more to show what is produced in the area) and lots of great advise!
I hope you enjoy this town! 🥰
