Hi all,

We are purchasing a 2 bed apartment which has no air con, can anyone who has had this installed in a similar property advise how much this costs and if you have any recommended installers? Would really appreciate the advice as my estate agent is going to get me a price but I will have no idea whether it’s competitive or I’m being over charged.

Would really appreciate your feedback.

thank you in advance.

Hi

Cost of air conditioning varies depending on:

a) number of units

b) type of units.

A ball park figure would be 500 / 700 euro per unit installed, dependent on actual a/c selected.

We had three fitted - one in each bedroom and one in the lounge. You may decide not to bother with bedroom units and just have one in the lounge.

I can recommend www.rodriguezclimason.comwho fitted ours.

Spanish company, but they speak excellent English and will advise best solution.

They turned up on time and did not stop until job completed. Cleaned up afterwards and very professional.

Aww thanks Gem, that’s really helpful. We weren’t sure about the bedrooms but I am sure it gets ridiculously hot in the summer so think we might need to.
thank you so much for coming back to me.

Do you really need air conditioning ??

We have a 2 bedroom Fiesta villa on A

Never used the air conditioning in 17 years.

Took it out & binned it several years ago.

I honestly have no idea, I thought everyone needed it in that part of spain due to the dry heat in the height of summer. I hadn’t considered that it may not be needed. Maybe I try a summer and see how it goes and install it at a later date if it’s we need it.

Good food for thought thank you for a different perspective! Might save me money short term that I can spend on furniture that I need to buy for my place. Which will be the next question I have, ha ha, best place to go for sofas and beds, fridge freezer snd washing machine!

:)

As per previous answers, the costs will vary with the number of units, size / output required, manufacturer, etc.

A few tips:

If there are just two of you, then maybe just the main bedroom and the lounge area (guests could use an electric fan).

Whoever gives you the quote should recommend the required output for the size of room, so you're not paying for a higher output unit than you need.

Brands such as Daikin & Samsung can cost twice as much as say Midia, with Misubishi in the middle. €700 - €1,400 for the same output unit.

Many units also have heating functionality, which will help in the winter.

They can be quite expensive to run - check your electricity tariff (e.g. €0.16 / kWh) multiply by the unit output (say 3 kW), so that's €0.48 per hour, which doesn't sound much - but if you have it on for 4 hours a day, every day, then that's €60 per month...

Iberdrola were recently offering interest free credit for 3 years and if you took out a maintenance package at about €3 per month, then a 10 year guarantee.

One final thing - think about what wall they are installed on and where the outside unit would go. If it can be sited on a balcony then that's easy, but if you're on the 3rd floor and the installer needs ladders or a small scaffold, then the costs will be higher.

Hope this helps!

Rich,

that is really helpful thank you for the info and advice really good point re where it will be located. The apartment has the wiring pre installed so I think it’s just the units and connecting them up.

another good point re the costs of running too, I hear that electricity is expensive so yes, definitely need to consider this.

Thank you so much for taking the time and the comprehensive info, very useful indeed.

Love this group, especially as I’m a newbie at all of this :)

I installed air con a few years ago. I cannot remember the cost (about 800 per unit I think)  but the ones which are both hot n cold  as it does get very cold in winter. I used them the first few summers as it does get violently hot. But when I stopped using it or limited the use,  and reverted to a fan / fans, I found outside heat a lot more bearable.  So I stick to fans at night now and limit use of air con so I adjust to daily heat better.  I found using air con at night I'd wake up in middle of night dehydrated completely.  In winter they are excellent  to be able to switch heat on. Most apartments in Spain dont have insulation so when it gets cold on a winters evening , it can feel colder than UK.

I've no regrets of installing the air con.
