Hi

does anyone know if rules have been reversed as I read last month, to allow residents to continue driving in Spain using their U K driving Licence. Keep hearing pub talk but would like to know if anyone has heard or seen any facts about rules changing.

Spanish driving test

Hi Roland

Yes I already read this but it seems that this lady did it of her own accord much earlier in July so I assume she still thought it would have to be done. However it was on the radio earlier this month as well that Spain and U K had decided to reverse the previous law. I might be wrong hence requesting comments as to anyone  else who may have heard something.

Do you still live at the address shown on your driving licence. If not is your licence actually legal, either in Spain , anywhere in the EU or even the Uk .Police may not accept any licence that does not show the address at which you can  be contacted. I do not know the answer  myself, perhaps someone with more knowledge can advise.

There was a post by the UK Ambassador in Spain today “Brits in Spain” on Facebook to say that things are still moving forward but as yet there is no agreement ratified. The upshot is that if you have a UK driving licence and you have been a resident in Spain for more than six months, you cannot drive until an agreement is reached or you pass a driving test in Spain

Hope that helps.

The person who posted that UK licencies are now OK was wrong. it us under discussion and not likely to be resolved until September mainly because Spain shuts down during August.

To avoid any confusion this was just a general enquiry, not specific to myself. I have lived in Spain for 18 years and have had a full Spanish driving licence almost 18 years. It was the incorrect address on licences that I queried.

When did they put ones address on the driving licence ? Its not on mine.

To the best of my knowledge on the face of a UK driving licence item 8 is a two line record of the holders registered address. Please correct me if I am wrong, it Is more than possible my information is out of date. My original query was concerning the UK driving licence, not the Spanish issued EU  one. The Spanish use the TIE/NIE details to trace you

I have actually just looked on Google for copies of a UK driving licence and several all show the UK address of the holder, again I am quite happy to be corrected.

Maybe we have a member of the Spanish legal society, Police, lawyer etc. Who reads these columns ?.

Driving licences don't have addresses on them but you are obliged by law to update your address, in the event of moving house, on all the relevant government offices. If you have a digital signature you can do this online on the various websites or by using the form below, on which you can tick which government departments you want to inform. I think that you can also upload a copy of your new "certificado de empadronamiento" to prove your new address at the same time.
