For those of you who were planning to exchange before the cut-off date of 30th June.

I attended the Traffico Dept in Cartegena for my appointment today, to commence the process to exchange my UK licence for a Spanish licence, now that I have my TIE.

My timeline:

1. Date of Resedencia/TIE application - 3 September, 2020.

2. Registered with DGT my intention to exchange my UK licence.

3. Approval of Resedencia/TIE application - 5 January 2021

4. Fingerprints, etc. for TIE - 2 February 2021

5. Collected TIE - 29 March 2021

Arrived at Traffico today with my Gestor and, along with another half dozen Brits and their Gestors, were turned away.

Apparently the 'new' ruling, effective today, is that if approval of Resedencia/TIE application (Item 3 above) is after 31 December 2020, you can no longer exchange your UK licence!

News to ALL in attendance today.

I am now officially a Spanish Resident, but will no longer be able to drive after 30th June, 2021 unless I pass the Spanish driving test!

Will investigate further and update if/when I have any answers.

The British Embassy held a Q&A session today (see Facebook Brits in Spain) where it was revealed talks between the UK and Spanish Governments are taking place regarding driving licence exchanged. With the current deadline being 30 June 2020 I would expect an update is issued soon and, hopefully wiithout the need to take a driving test.

Hi

Did you register to exchange it before the end of December?

Crazy. We applied for residencia in August. Accepted September October time. Our cards were ready in December but we didn't pick them up until January. Tie cards dated September.

We registered to exchange licences prior to December 2020 and exchanged in January and received eu licence 8 weeks later

Crazy? We have had our Residencias since August 2019 and my son applied to exchange his licence a year ago with his Gestoria who deals with his work accounts/taxes etc. A YEAR AGO but he’s been told some people are waiting 18 months!! He has the paperwork to confirm the application. Still no Spanish licence 😁

We arrived here Sept 2019. Residencia approved by mid Oct and did spanish driving licences ourselves in cartegena. Received within 3 months. Areas must differ but don't understand time length using a gestor.

I would sack the gestor and find someone else or do it yourself as that time frame is ridiculous

The paperwork given acts as a substitute licence until the actual one arrives.my Oh applied January 2019 and received the actual licence 12 months later. Carry the paperwork and if stopped produce it, a bit like the U.K. where you have the licence but also have to produce paperwork to show entitlement.
