Hi

I’ve just come back from a week in Los Alcazares, getting a feel for the area as a potential holiday home/rental.  Really liked the area, great fun with Spain Day and the celebrations, my only issue is the Mar Menor, the beach was packed with people but no one swimming or bathing.  Asked the hotel staff and they said it was too cold for to bathe??!! and the levels were safe.  I know the Mar Menor is sadly not the best.  Am so disappointed and sad for this area.  Where is the next best place to consider. I really like the beach and La Manga has some great beaches but is it good in low season when I’m spending time there.  Like the activity Los Alcazares has and don’t want to be in a ghost town but want to swim happily  in the sea. Would appreciate some good advice Thanks

Hi, we too recently spent time in Los Alcazares and loved it. We are hoping to move to Spain next year and L A was our first choice. Whilst we were there we had a torrential downpour and the following day lots of areas of the beach had been washed away and the sea was very brown in colour. A local told us that when there is a torrential downpour, sewerage and pesticides from the farmers fields get washed into the sea. We tried to find a site online that gave us safety readings for the Mar Menor, but could only find readings for the high season. It is such a shame as it's a beautiful area.

Personally overall I like Los Alcazares/Los Narejos, but a negative is the Mar Menor. I wasn't here when the beach had blue flag status but unfortunately it doesn't look top good now, water not exactly clear. I hope in time something can be done about it, I'm sure it's a negative to put some potential tourists and property buyers off. The only other small thing I feel is that the place itself could be a lot tidier, I'd rather pay more IBI and have council workers getting rid of litter everywhere, spoils the area.

We have been here several times now since last december and we have had the march rain and also last big rainfall where water came through the streets towards the mar. These are the only downpoints we had and did not stop us from buying here in LA. The weather is still fantastic, people are very nice and we still take a swim in the sea 😉. In regards of the trash, we see the cleaning cars from citycouncil few times a week here in the old town where they keep our neighborhood tidy.

I agree the people are nice, and  I don't regret buying a property, but as regards the litter, it's pretty much everywhere walking from Los Narejos to the old town. It's a small point, but a few people who have visited me did comment on it.

My wife swam every day last week, well out from the beach, water clear and she could see fish on the sea-bed. I swam close to the beach and it was clear there too.

I live full time in LA and have seen lots of people in the sea including myself, the schools take the children down there for water sports ,the council are spending a fortune on drains and filter system to clean water going into the sea, water runs down hill and into every sea, the mar menor is full of fish, most of the litter is caused by inconsiderate holiday makers ,roads are always being cleaned

Most people swim in the mar menor ,safety levels are now really good after a scare a few years ago .

Sea around the coast is always about the same temperature,so if you want safety swimming and bathing with a great amount of locals using it I would recommend Los Alcazares every time.

If you want to swim in the sea away from the Mar Menor (which I would recommend), you could try El Mojón Beach, which is only 18 kms away.
