Hi Ann,

Welcome to Fortuna.

There is a builders merchant type place on the way into Fortuna called Ideco. If you type Idea Decora into google maps you will find it easily.

They are very helpful but very little English.

Take care

Steve

Hi Ann,

I couldnt help smile at your comment, "massive 965sq mtr" area. We are at this very moment(day 5) gravelling part of 5680sq mtrs of Campo land in the hope it cuts down on the weeding we spend all our visits doing. Places like Brico Dept or builders merchants slap a hefty profit on top of the quarry prices, so I googled" quarry near my location" on phone and found loads of quarries. I went to 3 local and got a lorry of full capacity of 15ton for 9.5€ ton. We bought 3 lorries(45ton), 429€ in total and no extra for delivery. This has only done quarter of our 5000+sq mtrs ie. 2sides around house, with a plan for same amount to complete other sides next year. So if you know how much you need or go to builders merchant and get a estimate of how much needed with price, then visit a quarry and price there as you will need the saving to pay for the weed membrane, which I found very expensive and not worth doing on our size of area. Some of our area was thinly gravelled already and weeds had been 90% surpressed so reckon with decent thicker covering it will do the job. To give you an idea, altogether we are only covering half our 5680sq Mt's leaving rest to nature so approx 2800 will be gravelled of which we needed 45ton approx to do half that area, so approx 1400sq Mt's. Think perhaps you,ll need about 2x 15 ton lorries(30ton) for 1000ish sq Mt's and quarries would deliver at that amount. Sounds a lot but you,d be surprised how little it covers. Some weeds still come through membranes and it all depends on having a decent depth. This will be our 5th garden gravelling but definitely the largest. Hope this helps you, sorry different area but many quarries around.

Regards

Pauline

Hi Ann

Getting your stone from the quarry is a lot cheaper! and that's exactly what we wanted to do but the only problem we had is that we couldn't get the lorry into or anywhere near our villa. I dont know the layout of your place but the quarry trucks are very big!

So we went back to Ideco up the road. ( Idea Builders Merchants ).  We bought bags that yes are more expensive, from memory we bought 20 bags for about 240 . Still massively cheaper than the UK.

The other advantage was there was plenty of stone to choose from, 10mm 20mm 30mm different colour etc .

Then when delivery came they used a smaller truck the driver couldn't of been more helpful, he craned the bags over the fence and placed the bags at intervals so less wheel barrow / spreading. Moving 20 30 40 tonnes of stone with a wheel barrow and spade keeps you fit!

As for membrane as previously said I wouldn't bother. Honestly the weeds here will grow straight through it. Their like weeds on steroids! Just a good thick covering then if you see a little green stem poking through pick it off throw it away.

Cheers Simon.

The weeds will still grow through the membrane although not as bad.

Weed seeds will also germinate in the gravel as this provides ideal conditions for them.

Morning Ann,

Can you pass me the contact details please? Normally I use builder's merchant in town at €16 a ton and then delivery cost. I have a good area to cover once i can get back out.

Regards

Mick
