Good day.

Appreciate this has probably been discussed numerous times and apologies.

I'm in the process of buying a Spanish registered second hand car in the UK and was hoping someone maybe able to advise on a list of pitfalls I need to look out for, and what needs to be in place to make the car completely compliant when I drive it to Spain and leave it at my apartment.

Thank you

Peter

Hi you must first of all confirm it is legal, not stolen or have debts I would suggest you use a company called Carfax that will supply all theses details for a small fee.

Then arrange to have it registered in the area you are buying or own your property  if it is over 3 years old it would need a n itv equivalent to an mot in the uk,

The most important thing, once you have decided that the vehicle is exactly as being described, is to ensure that the paperwork is done correctly, otherwise, you might end up paying outstanding fines etc, that are owed by the previous owner. Always get a specialised gestor de vehiculos to do tranfer of ownership. They do charge a small sum but the majority of the money that you will have to pay, are the government taxes due on the transfer of the ownership of the vehicle. This will be a % of the price being paid. The gestor takes copies of the documents and personal details of both the vendor and the buyer of the vehicle and they do all the paperwork and pay the taxes on the buyer's behalf, for which you will be given a copy of the legal change of ownership, plus a copy of the taxes paid on the transfer. The paperwork can take a while to do but you will be given a 30-day document, showing that the vehicle documents are in the process of being transferred, should you be stopped by the police during that period. If they take longer than a month, then your gestor will update that 30 day document. Remember it's buyer beware, so buy the car from a person that you trust or from a proper concesionario de vehiculos de segunda mano. Once the car is in your name, you will be liable for the payment of the IVTM (road tax) each year. Your local Ayuntamiento will show the dates that this is due on their payment noticeboard or website.

And if the car has been used in the UK it should/could have had its headlights changed or adjusted for driving on the left. Worth asking if the original LHD headlights are still with the car, and check that the reversing light is on the right side for Spain. Just adding that an ITV is not needed until the car is 4 years old, then every 2 years up to age 10.

Although you,re buying in Uk, you can still contact a Spanish gestor to check the cars validity. I suggest you email "getlegalinspain.com" who could check and give you advice on what,s needed after it comes to Spain. I, m also not sure you can drive it in the UK either as read similar situations required transporting vehicle to Spain, not driving. Uma at get legal will give you correctadvice and lot cheaper than any solicitor.

Pauline
