Hi my husband and i are looking for a 3 month winter rental and after many hours of searching i have stumbled on Isla Plana. It looks beautiful, quiet and very Spanish? Is this a suitable base for cycling with easy reach to other resorts? Also does it tend to be windy during winter months? TIA

Hello, we spent 3 months in Mazzaron during the winter. We visited Isla plana on many occasions as we had friends there. You won’t be disappointed it really is a lovely place to winter. There are two very nice camping sites in Isla plana too if you are thinking of camping. Plenty of restaurants open, a beautiful promenade to walk along, a supermarket for your day to day needs and then you have Mazarron just five minutes in the car. Can’t comment on whether it was windy, it certainly wasn’t when we were there. Might see you there this winter, we are staying the other side of Cartagena for a change of scenery this time, but will be visiting Isla plana to see our friends.

Thank you for your reply Stan. You have painted a lovely picture of the area and it sounds very attractive indeed! Our only concern is the road from Mazzaronñ to Isla Plana! Is it a steep mountain road and if so is it accessible by road bike? The whole idea of being out there is for winter road cycling and of course to avoid winters in the UK! If the road is unsuitable we will have to look at Mazarron but it is not until next winter. We will be looking for 3 months rental that allow a dog ( 9 yr cocker spaniel) but yes hopefully bump into you 😀

You certainly can cycle, there are lots of lovely cycle routes, but it is uphill from Mazarron. I am going to give you the email address of our friends who are there at the moment. Colin is a keen cyclist and likes to go out most days and I’m sure will give you lots of tips. [email protected]

Hi, we have lived in Isla Plana for 5 years ( part year IP- part year UK). I can confirm that the road from Mazarrón Town or Puerto Mazarrón to Isla Plana is a normal almost flat two lane road,(two or three speed bumps!) definitely not a mountain road. If you are renting on Mojon Hills then yes it is a hill up from the village but it’s a proper tarmac road. There are a large number of cyclists who do use mountain roads and tracks as a “ good day out” by choice as they are so close. Shops, restaurants bars etc are easily reached on a leisurely cycle ride to the port area.

Hope this helps, Jaz

Hi Jaz thank you for your reply which has certainly helped and making Mojon Hills an option also. It seems a perfect location for cyclists, and all amenities close by. Your comments are appreciated! Thanks Denise

Just a thought— if you go onto the website casasdelmar.properties ( the local estate agent in the village) then click on “ menu” on left side, then onto “ blog/ videos there are a few short videos/ drone pics of Isla Plana. Will give you more of a feel for the area. Jaz

Hi Denise,

I have just read your post. We have a 2 bedroom apartment in Mojon Hills which may be available, for the period you are looking for (dependant on dates). Isla Plana is a great place to cycle from. Happy for you to give me a call if this may be of benefit to you . 07919290897
