Hi, ive just arrived in isla plana and need advice on what to do and where to go with regards to applying for residency and getting nie number and any info on starting a business. I have found so much conflicting info i thought id ask here. Also i think arriving from the uk in August wasnt the best idea as this heat is alot more then expected, how do we keep cool? All advice on above greatly appreciated. Thank you

We don't go there in August because of the heat. In fact it works out generally that the Summer school holidays in UK are the hottest time in Spain.

September and October are lovely though, still hot but bearable.

If you are going to live there full time I would recommend Air Conditioning installed in the home. We don't have it as we only go out there mid April to May, June to mid July and mid September to October.

The other thing you will notice is it is cold in Winter in the properties (usually between January and March) and heating is a good idea to get in advance if you don't have it already.

You can sort your NIE number yourself easily. You have to make an appointment at the police station in Cartagena. We went up for the day and combined with some shopping and sightseeing. We called in at the station (which is near the seafront and very easy to find) to make an appointment and at that point they advise what documents you need to bring with you to the appointment (which is at the same place should the police officer at the front desk tell you different), so you will have two visits to Cartagena.  At the appointment you will definitely need your passport and evidence of where you live in Spain such as a copy of your contract (a Spanish translation is helpful as not all officers speak or read English). They will ask you how long you have been in Spain and how long you are staying in Spain, and why do you need an NIE number. We told them we wanted to enrol on education courses and also needed to buy a car in the autumn. They will send you across the road to the print shop and the chap in there will do all the photocopying, complete the online forms and print off for you to take back to the police station immediately afterwards. You may have to sit and wait outside the office for a few minutes then it’s just a case of getting the forms approved and stamped... around 15 minutes if all straight forward. You will need to take cash.  It’s less than €10 for the document and I think around €5 for all the copying etc at the print shop. We didn’t mention working in Spain so that may involve more paperwork. Hope this was helpful.
