Hi, we are a family with young kids (6 and 4) looking to buy a small holiday apartment in costa calida. Our budget is around 50k maybe a bit more. We both have demanding jobs in London and will be visiting for an odd weekend and a couple of weeks in summer and looking to rent it out the rest of the time. It will most likely be just one of us travelling with the kids and we do not drive. So it is important that the property is within walking distance or has good public transport links to all the amenities, supermarket and there is a good hospital with an A&E department not too far. I do not like swimming pools, so a nice beach within 15-20 min walking distance is a must. We are not too bothered about cafes and restaurants as we mostly cook at home, but a good supermarket or a regular market is a must. I was initially looking around Mar Menor area but was told this is very shallow and not really a proper place for swimming. So I started researching la manga strip as it also has access to the sea. However it looks very far from all the shops and does not have good transport links. I must admit I have not visited costa calida and planning to come over in October for the first time. But I do not get that much time off from work so would like to view a few properties and possibly buy one straight away. Any advice would be much appreciated.

I think you need to come and see for yourself...you will struggle to get anything within your budget with what you what in this area. Maybe considering renting first rather than trying to buy. You need a tourist licence to rent out property so its a long process and you will pay tax on the income....look at CAB Spain for information

Thank you for your advice. I have seen a lot of properties advertised that fit our specifications and budget (50-60k) in different areas. We only want a small one bed/ studio flat in livable condition with a small balcony near the beach and supermarkets with good transport links.  I am not looking for a villa with a sea view. Most of the properties I have seen advertised that seem suitable are either in la Manga del Mar Menor strip, Honda beach or Mazarron, alcazares and la pagan areas. I do not have much time to travel around without booking a few viewings unfortunately. I just need some advice on what area would be best for a single parent with young kids, safe and has a nice feel. I am not too bothered about having ex pats community. I have been told by a friend not to bother with anywhere that does not have a Mediterranean beach because Mar Menor is a “paddling pool” and really not suitable for swimming by anyone above the age of 4. Also she told me that la manga strip is only good if you have car otherwise it is too far from anything. Is that right? Long term rent is not an option for us as I need to invest my savings ASAP.

Forgot to add that renting the place out is only to keep it occupied a few weeks per year and to generate some income to cover the costs of upkeep so fine with pay income and register it with the authorities. I am not looking to make money out of it.
