Hi there x I need to change electric company how do I do this? My In laws owned a property of which my MIL passed away a few years ago. We need to close the bank account she had (banco poplar) but that had the direct debit to pay the electric bill.  The electricity is also on her name so we need to set up a new bank account and electric company in my husbands name. Any guidance would be gratefully received as we are only out in la manga a couple of weeks a year xx

This will be very simple.

Firstly do not close the account the energy company has on file as they will cut you off if payments are not made.

Either change the name online and update the banking details with your current supplier and stay with who you have or look for another supplier and start a fresh by giving th enew name from the start..

In spain it is cheaper to just change the name so dont get caught out by ending the contract and having to pay a re connection fee. It should never happen but it does.

When looking for a new company dont get caught out on paying a deposit, being locked in a 12 month contract or that a selling point is bills in English.Nearly all providers in spain offer service in English.

If you have more questions PM me, I change providers every 12-14 months in spain and know the procedure backwards.

Hi there - thanks for the reply.

We cut off the landline with Telefonica about 3 years ago but no matter what we send them, they still proceed to pull a monthly DD!!  We went to the bank last year and they said that the best way to stop it was to close the bank account and open a new one.  Like you say, if we close the account the electric will be shut down too, however, the electric contract is still in my late mother-in-laws name so not sure if the electric company would allow us to change the name and bank details?

Regarding Telecom, just stop the Direct Debit at your bank. You have left it a long time, but you can reclaim some payments, not all. If your bank does not comply with this request ask for a Complaint Form.

Once you " stop" the direct debit your bank becomes liable for any future attempts.

Hi,

The electric company will allow you to change the name and bank details without trouble. You would just need to have the correct current details they have on file for the property which would include your late mother in laws id that was registered at the time, either a passport or nie number. Those details are all found on your invoices.

They may charge a 10euro fee for changing the name but its very simple.

For the DD of the phone, if you have online banking you can retrieve the money back if it was automatically debited. This has to be done within a specific number of days which I cant remember how many.
