Hi I’m trying to close a bank account

But it’s impossible

I have been told that there is a block on the account so I can not zero it

Until it’s zero I can’t close

In the mean time charges are being put on

I’m so flustrated as I’m in the uk the bank has had so much money from commissions it’s day light robbery

We don’t owe anyone anything

Has anyone else heard of this m

Is it just a way of getting more money from you

Firstly I would recommend that you find out what the block on your account is. It could be an unpaid fine or tax bill. It could also be that you need to go to the bank to identify yourself in person, as some banks are insisting that UK residents update their green residencia document for a TIE or just to confirm that they are still alive and resident at the address on the contract. If you are a resident and want to reduce your bank charges, there are now several Spanish banks offering completely free banking online. I have just changed from Sabadell, with whom I was very happy until last September when they introduced charges, even for people who previously got free banking. I've now closed that account and have chosen BBVA as my new bank and now have a free online bank account with a credit card. Their website is available in English too!

Does your solicitor have power of attorney? If they do, ask them to sort this out for you. Good luck.

Hi I closed my Sabadell bank account by ringing them from UK.When you call ask if they speak English  if they don't ask them to transfer you to a English speaking advisor.

We're with Sabadell. I asked them to switch us to the free online account but they wouldn't entertain it so it's going to be their loss. Sabadell also said as we don't have any linked products, eg. Insurance, we would just need to make an appointment to close the account. I've already moved our Direct Debits to Wise and, when we get back to Spain, we'll open a free online account elsewhere, withdraw lump sums to transfer our funds, then when there's around €100 left we'll close the Sabadell account and walk out with the closing balance. It might be a bit of a faff but we're fed up paying extortionate charges for an account that doesn't meet our needs. Hope you get sorted too. Cheers 😊

Yes there not good they have had thousands in fees from us when we sold our property

But they won’t let you just close the account as it has to be zero and in our case have put a 15€ block so we’re unable

Not happy gona put in a complaint one of the reasons we sold in Spain

Always willing to take your money but never willing to help if you have issues

Many thanks for your input

I sold my villa about a year ago and the 3% retention was paid to my Spanish bank account Sabadell and as my solicitor had power of attorney they closed the account and transferred the money with no problem. Sabadell used to be good when I transferred my pension each month to the account, but when it stopped their bank charges are horrendous, but service was excellent, most spanish banks charge a fee ,but depends on the balance in the account
