Hi all

We are considering buying a small second hand car  as the cost of car rental is ridiculous. Can anyone give any advise on this ie; how much roughly would insurance  be , nct. Tax. Does an insurance  policy cover many drivers that dont have to be named on the policy?, where could we buy a car?

Any advise would be appreciated

Thanks

Hi Catherine, I couldn't advise you on where to buy a car but on insurance I'd recommend Liberty Seguras. I was unfortunate enough to have my car written off by someone ignoring a stop sign and the service I received was amazing. The girls in the particular office I use constantly checked that I was ok, was happy with my hire car and, within a couple of weeks I had my car value paid out in full plus 30%. which surprised me so very happy. The cost depends on the car and driver details but mine is around €350.  my car tax is €98 for a Ford Focus. Interestingly enough one of the extremely well known online insurers did a sales call to me recently and in their pitch informed me my company only gave a replacement car for 3 days absolute lies ,!  I had the hire car for  two weeks so watch for the chancers they're not always Direct!!

I should add, Catherine, that the policy is open driving for anyone between 25 and 75 . I think that's the age range you just have to inform them if the driver falls outside that range

www.coches.net is the equivalent of Autotrader in Spain, covering New, Used (Secondo Mano) and 'Km 0' cars - which are nearly new, pre-registered, ex-demonstrators; so this may be a good place to start to get an idea of the market. However, note that many dealerships offer a 'cash' price and a 'finance' price. The 'finance' price is commonly 10% lower than the 'cash' price, but doesn't include the cost of the finance. Also, remember that 'mileage' is actually in kilometers!

The used car market is not as large as in the UK and cars are a bit more expensive. This is due to the fact that companies generally don't provide company cars so there are very few 3 year old ex-fleet cars going into the market; and also as Spaniards traditionally hand cars down through the family until they have been run into the ground! There are however, quite a few small dealers offering high km, older cars for reasonable prices.

In my experience, car insurance is similar in cost to the UK - we used Linea Direct (the equivalent of Direct Line) - and the cost was competitive. I've also seen posts on this forum stating that you can negotiate down the price with Direct Line, but I have no experience of this myself. Policies tend to cover any driver over the age of 25 years.

Car tax is based on the car's horsepower & emissions. We pay €23 per year car tax for a 1 year old Ford Puma.

Hope this helps!

Hi Rich,

I have had a look on the website you recommended thanks for that, one to bear in mind for the future for us.

In regards to the cash prices shown, is that what you would pay to drive away or is there some Spanish Vat or tax that would be lumped on?

Cheers Rick
