Hi

We are looking for a way to get our Cocker Poo back to Wales (UK).

We will not have our own transport.

We are unable to travel as a foot passenger on a ferry.

It costs to much to travel together by courier by road.

Willing to take an unwanted car back to the UK if necessary.

Anybody know if dog would  be allowed on a train.

Thank uou

Phil

Hi Phil,

Tricky one for sure. Just stating the obvious, given that Wales is part of the UK, you will need a way of crossing the Channel. Euro Tunnel requires a vehicle. Eurostar will only accept assistance dogs (documentation required). You are therefore left with no option but to travel as a foot passenger on a ferry?! When you said you can’t travel as a foot passenger on the ferry, I presume you meant BF from Bilbao or Santander? If so, you are quite right. A car is required unfortunately. If you can get to Dieppe, DFDS accept foot passengers with a dog. The only requirement is that you book a pet friendly cabin. That docks at Newhaven, which is better for you than Dover. You can get a train from Newhaven (on the port), via Brighton, to Cardiff. No restrictions on travelling on trains with a dog in UK.

So, how to get to Dieppe?! Spanish fast trains (ICE) allow dogs, but have limitations on size. They will require the pooch to be placed in a carrier. Local, commuter trains, less restrictive, but will take an age. Once in France, you can take a dog on fast trains (TGV), but he will need to be muzzled.

Dogs must have a paid train ticket in France and Spain. No payment required for a dog travelling by train in UK. Dog will also need travel documentation. I presume he has a Spanish pet passport? If you traveled to Spain from UK with the dog using an AHC, that would expire within 4 months. Indeed, the dog may be Spanish and never travelled, in which case he will need a PP.

A further hurdle would be the tapeworm medication required for entry into UK. This treatment must be administered at least 24 hours before entry to UK and a maximum of 120 hours. This presents timing issues. The obvious thing to do is find a vet in Dieppe, factoring in a 4/5 hour crossing.

I did say it was tricky! Feel free to reach out if you need help. Good luck.

Hi

I have just looked at your opinion via Dieppe and DFDS do not permit dogs on foot on ferries into the UK

Thank you for your help

Phil

It’s not an opinion, I have friends that travelled with a dog as a foot passenger on that route. You are wrong.

FYI (taken from DFDS FAQ)

Can I travel with my pet if I am travelling as a foot passenger?

On our Newcastle – AmsterdamNewhaven – DieppeOsloFrederikshavnCopenhagen & Baltic routes you can travel with your pet as a foot passenger, however where applicable, you must book a dog friendly kennel or a pet friendly cabin. Alternatively, on selected routes, your pet can stay in the vehicle.

There's a section stating can I travel with my pet as a foot passenger?

Hi Paul

Sorry wasn't wanting to sound offensive with use of the word opinion.

I have followed the booking route it allows for me to provide

Route, Passengers, No Vehicle.

On pets it will not allow the entry for number of pets.

It looks like it will have to be a call and not on line  will look to find a number.

Again, sorry didn't mean to offend, and thank you for your help.

Phil

No offence taken Phil. I’m just trying to help you out of a pickle.

I should have added, that booking a dog as a foot passenger on DFDS cannot be done on line. Unfortunately, it requires a telephone call (how very last century!). You must book either a dog friendly cabin or kennel.

The information is 100% accurate. If you can deal with the journey up to Dieppe, it’s your only option.

If you go for it, box clever with the tapeworm requirements. Another layer of complexity.

Bon voyage!

Hiya - something that may help with the tapeworm issue - I had a dog taken on a transport to UK - my vet was prepared to sign the passport and stamp it with a time appropriate for the ferry and gave me the medication to administer when required - you may be able to do similar with your vet here - one less headache - good luck

I don’t know if it is useful or not - I used a transporter who specializes in taking dogs and cats from Mallorca to UK - there may be other services in this area - Caroline may consider collecting a dog on the way through so to speak! Her company is Magic Car-Pet and she has a Facebook page - just a thought
