The thing is you have to weigh up everything, not just the cost of food and beer/wine.

Council tax/IBI - we pay €195/year, back in the UK, it was nearly that per month.

Electricity - our February winter fuel bill (all our fuel usage is electricity), using electricity to power inverter AC units for heating was €80 - I suspect in the UK it would be a fraction higher!

Shopping - you can shop around and some food products are more expensive here and some are cheaper. I think supermarket quality here tends to be better than in the UK, obviously depends on what you buy. If you must buy the brands you use in the UK then you are going to get stung. Our average bill for 2 people is €80-85 per week. That is buying everything from either Mercadona, Aldi or Lidl including alcohol (sometimes lol). Alcohol - beer is cheap, wine is dirt cheap, bottled water is very cheap.

You can still get a menu del dia for under €12pp including beer/soft drink or a bottle of wine - so it is a pretty good deal still.

Then of course, you have that orange ball in the sky - that is free of charge and in plentiful supply - something you cannot say of UK (most of the time). We live on the coast and have a wonderful sea view from our balcony. What price for that?

Yes I realize if you take everything into account, it’s probably cheaper in Spain. I was only commenting on food prices in local supermarkets. I have now realized it’s Aldi lidle or mercadona for main shop.

Now if I could only work out what bus goes where and when I’m laughing.

People - you have missed out DIA supermarkets. - I have found them to be the allround cheapest for staples. They also have fresh meat, and fresh fish counters, so you can control the amount you have to buy . The downside - not a great choice of brands, but basics are basic in any shop. Buy yoursel...

...f a 30 min. cookbook, and make some quick nutricious meals you'll like.

Yes I went to Dia other day,it’s a bit of a walk for me, but I liked the shop .

Cheers

Hola everyone

Just been to local supermarket ( no car so usually shop local) The prices are outrageous. 1 liter of milk 1.50 euros 2 tomatoes 90 cents. Yesterday I got bus to dos mares carrefour thinking gotta be cheaper, mince that would cost £2 in England €3.87 bottle jar of tomato frito , want to make a s...

...paghetti bowl €2.89, better one be a pound back home.Over €7 euros to make a spaghetti bowl! The only thing I have found cheaper in Spain was a bottle red wine. Now I love Spain and my apartment in lo pagan, but I can’t afford to stay here for long

Yes Spain certainly has got more expensive I find buying food and vegetables at the local markets in San Pedro and Lo Pagan very good value and quality if you are really price conscious wait until the market is closing and you get a lot of stuff reduced

You can see why the income requirements for a NLV are set so high. It is not in Spain’s interest to encourage immigrants who struggle rather than contribute.

Try EconomyCash at the top of Avda Rio Nalon (“the strip”) too.

Very good write up , but your electric bill for the winter months February you quoted 80 and here in the uk would be a fraction more , I’m very careful but some folk say I’m tight and my electric bill is £115 plus then there is the gas bill too add £70 so it’s a lot cheaper over there to live when adding everything together compared to the uk
